Last Year Anders Breivik Killed 77 People –Now It’S Room Service, His Own Suite And Japanese Meditation

Featured Replies

Today, as he has every day for the past eight months, Anders Behring Breivik will sit down to a wholesome breakfast of porridge or home-made brown bread served with either cheese or ham, and a jug of black coffee.

And, as he has every day since his arrest, he will eat alone.

The man responsible for Norway’s most notorious mass murder is kept apart from the other inmates in Ila, a former Nazi concentration camp turned high-security prison. If they could get near him they might kill him.

No remorse: Anders Behring Breivik, 32, pictured moments after his arrest, still in the police clothes he wore for when he killed 77 people in twin attacks on July 22, last year

Tomorrow, Breivik, who killed 77 people on July 22 last year, will go on trial in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

The 33-year-old set off a bomb in the centre of the capital that killed eight people and then two hours later went on a shooting rampage on the island of Utoya, killing another 69, many of them teenage members of the Norwegian Labour Party’s youth wing attending a summer camp

He might even be worse than Zimmerman!coffee1.gif The idea of the jug of coffee galls. A cup isn't good enough for him?

There was an article in today's Times about the prison he'll probably be sent to after the trial. The governor explained Norway's attitude to criminals, prisons and justice which would horrify the hang em and flog em brigade in the UK. He also pointed out that the UK had a recidivism rate of 50-60% while Norway's recidivism rate is 20%.

i have also read this, but then look at the Thi Prison Systems, and similar bad condtions, and the re offending rate is also low .. so what is the UK doing wrong? , is it the Make up of prisoners??? .. how they are treated?, ... would be interesting if someone done a report

According to the article the Norwegians consider that prisoners will eventually have to leave prison and rejoin society and they treat them accordingly. The maximum you can spend in the nick in Norway is 21 years. They don't treat them like caged animals. They always assume that people are reedemable. It seems to work better than the UK system.

Sweden has a similar policy and prisons without bars where prisoners serve time 5 years or less left to serve.

Moral:- if you wish to commit a mass murder, check the legal system of the country first. Then go to Sweden.

Sorry, Norway... but I don't think it makes much difference!

But then you'll have 21 years of Swedish TV - just two talking heads on the screen, discussing profound matters of fiscal responsibility 24/7. Cruel and unusual punishment to the nth degree.

Maybe this is the answer to how you should deal with long-term prisoners.... bore them to tears with TV discussion programmes on abstruse topics. And don't let them turn it off!

Fly him to rural Afghanistan and parachute him in naked with no money/no passport and sporting anti-Islamic tattoos all over his body. Then do a reality t.v. show about how he fares. A short run. coffee1.gif

He'll get locked up for 21 years and, if they think he's still dangerous, he'll be kept in till he dies. That's how they work. That's why their recidivism rate is a third of that of the UK and the US. I realise that it's not as viscerally satisfying as revenge but the Norwegians don't go in for revenge much. It serves no purpose as both Jesus and the Buddha have said.

He murdered 77 children in cold blood. His execution would serve the purpose of ridding the earth of one evil dude.

What you can't see from this photo is that John Maclane is standing in Harlem at the time.

I never think of "revenge" as a major part of the death penalty. Like you say, it's just removing a dangerous individual from society while wasting as little of taxpayer money as possible.

Most mass murderers are Heads of State who do it by proxy.... Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein, Boris Putin, President Asad (the current one), the Emperor Bokassa, Muammar Gaddafi etc. Those who are not completely mad equip themselves with lots of money, and take refuge in a state which has no extradition treaties (Idi Amin, and who's madder than he was?). Why should a mad Norwegian get any better treatment? Or indeed worse?

You left Tony Bliar off that list (Iraq and Aeghanistan) and Call-me-Dave Camoron for Libya.

Great Britiain had no reason for any attack on any of these countries.

It is ridiculous to compare the leader of a democratically elected gov't backing military action against another nation to a murderous nutjob dressing up like a policeman, pretending to help youths (up to 25 yrs old) then gunning down dozens in cold blood.

yes and no

they are both ' Killing ' as what they are doing, they beleive is correct ... why would one human be different to another? ... ( although all acts are wrong )

But Saddam was executed.

I said "Those who were not completely mad....". Saddam was; so were most of the others (Bokassa, Gaddafi (at the end, anyway), and of course Idi Amin, though he managed to get away).

No, I don't think Blair and Cameron, nor yet Bush, Sarkozy, and Obama, all implicated in Iraq/Afghanistan/Libya, come quite in the same category. Most of the others killed people for the sheer fun of it.

There are differences in our world - between humans, animals, beers. That's the way the world is - not the PC Utopia some people try to make it out to be.

One glaring difference in regards to this topic is that the sight of Blair or Cameron walking toward them never caused anyone to run away screaming and begging for their lives. To take that further, the overwhelming majority of Afghans (or Iraqis before them) don't run away screaming and begging for their lives when they see a Coalition soldier coming toward them either.

Utter nonsense - don't believe everything you read - learn to differentiate between sources - the Daily Mail???? come on!!

You should also try to understand the Norwegian justce system.

It's so refreshing to see a government that doesn't jump into nape-of-the-neck legislation but actually looks carefully at the situation and doesn't erode it's own democratic principles because of one "mad" killer.

They ought to make a new law in his honor -- life sentence possible in especially severe murder convictions.

Secure unit designed for Anders Breivik regardless of imminent verdict

Rose Troup Buchanan and Agencies3:44PM BST 23 Aug 2012

Breivik, 33, has claimed responsibility for the shootings and bombings in Norway on 22 August last year, which killed 77 people and were the deadliest in Norway since the Second World War.

If convicted on the grounds of insanity he will be cared for in a secure psychiatric unit. If sane, as his defence has argued, he will go to prison.

In either scenario he will be housed in top security Ila prison just outside Oslo.

From the article:

In order to accommodate Breivik, Ila prison is planning to build a new wing by 2013. This will serve as a small hospital if he is ordered to undergo psychiatric care. It has been deemed that existing psychiatric hospitals would be insufficient.

The cost of such a facility has been estimated by Norway’s health ministry to be between two million and three million kroner, around £300,000.
