Record marijuana haul seized in Saraburi

SARABURI: -- Police yesterday seized the Kingdom's biggest-ever haul of marijuana, weighing about 3.45 tonnes, at a house in Saraburi. Officials estimated it to be worth about Bt51 million.

The marijuana was packaged in boxes with a British address listed as their destination.

Police arrested Nipon "Yap" Mopad, 43, for possession of the illicit drug. His arrest was announced at a press conference.

Saraburi police chief Maj-General Chalit Preechaharn said Nipon confessed that he had been paid Bt100,000 to deliver the drug to the Bangkok Port, from where it was to be sent to an overseas destination.

"He has done it a few times before. He said the illicit drug came from the Northeast," Chalit said.

The suspect has implicated two other men, Chalit said. However, these accomplices were identified only as "Tos" and "Tong". Nipon's pickup truck and gun were seized and his bank accounts frozen, the officer said.

"We will investigate the case further," Chalit said.

At the same press conference, Highway Police Commander Maj-General Noraboon Naenna said Saraburi Highway Police officers intercepted a pickup truck on Phaholyothin Road in Saraburi's Nong Khae district yesterday morning and found 648 kilograms of marijuana bars in the vehicle.

"The pickup driver, Achariya Pomyukon, tried to flee the scene, but the Highway Police officers managed to arrest him," Noraboon said.

According to Noraboon, the suspect later confessed that he had picked up the illicit drug from Amorn Khamlah at a Tesco Lotus outlet in Nakhon Phanom and was preparing to take it to the Min Buri market in Bangkok. Achariya said he was paid Bt35,000 per delivery.

Meanwhile, Corrections Department director-general Suchat Wong-ananchai announced that his department had found nearly 60,000 methamphetamine tablets, 9,513 cell phones, and 5,834 SIM cards in prisons across the country during the past six months.

"We have dismissed 28 prison officials for allowing these banned items in the correctional facilities," Suchat said.

Sources said that apart from the assistance gained from corrupt prison officials, wealthy inmates had received outside help from people in their circles, including engineers who had been assigned to complete tasks inside the prisons, and gang members who married local women so their wives could gain easy access to the correctional facilities.

The police could have allowed the delivery of decoy packages to the address in the UK after confiscating the real stuff and liasing with the Brittish police, then the recipient could have been nabbed as well.

Surprised no-one noticed it being grown. At a rough guess 3.5 tonnes of dope would be a plantation area of 2 or more hectares (more than 12 Rai), which with all the associated irrigation etc. is a little hard not to notice.

Including all the pickers, sorters, guards, paid of locals & officials; there must literally be 100's in on the deal.

Would like to be a fly on the wall in CKR's office this morning. Sure to be a busy place one way or the other.

Tos and Tong - Chalit said he will "investigate further."

"Nipon "Yap" Mopad"........Sounds like a good name for a new Japanese scooter.

As for k.Yap, sounds like someone grassed him up.

I have heard several people over the years at the poker tables that seemed to have money but never worked much, saying they "are in the import export business". Uh huh. OK.

Can't allege anything negative about this UK storage and wharehousing company yet. This shipment may have been in its infancy, or may be going through a third party broker that up front is certifying all is legal and straight up, etc. Would love somebody in the UK to see if anything makes the local news in that area. The Thai article says the guy has done this before. To the same place/company? Produce the shipping certification documents, manifest declarations, bonding clearance etc.

No no no. HM Revenue and Customs will handle this. They have far greater powers than the Kent Constabulary. For starters they do not need search warrants andhave extensive powers regarding confiscation. Their powers originate from the times when import duties and taxes went to the Crown and not the Government i.e. you were scamming the King (or Queen in this case). Anybody who has conducted a business in the UK knows that it is madness to play around with Customs officers who are responsible for collecting VAT. They can descend on you at any time, seal the premises and go through the books with a fine tooth comb. Customs officers are by no means the same as Mr. Plod and entry qualifiations are far higher than those for the Fuzz..

He probably meant "Cheech and Chong"

That guy on the floor probably missed a payment somewhere. Its a good photo actually, he looks like he's trying to remember who didn't get their envelope this month. IMO a lot or most of this gear will probably still end up being sold, maybe even in Europe. Going to be some nice new cars being bought by some people.

it's a weed. it requires little or no attention to grow. When I lived in Japan back in the 70's, there were several acres of hemp growing. It was a vast field left over from WW2. no one had irrigated or cultivated it in decades. But, there is was, stalks as much as 2 meters high.

And why would you want them nabbed? Do you actually think there's something wrong with smoking marijuana?

Some guys have all the luck. Was it any good?

It said in the first UK based link that the lot was worth a million pounds. Well, that depends how you look at it. Selling it all in one go yes, but if you break it down into ounces and then sold it, you would get close to 13million, and if you sold it all as individual '10 bags' you are looking at 21.5million for the lot. However that would take a while, not as long as the jail sentences about to be janded down though.

Sure, many are in on this one. Not a single man operation.

So all they caught was the driver, well done boys

Easy to replace him. It's always the small fish that get fried.

I have indulged on occasion when I was younger, dumber and devoid of a sense of responsebility, if people want to indulge in a way that does not endanger others, i.e driving while stoned then go for it, and long term use does affect the health of the user, but if that much hooch is being transported then the question needs to be asked who is reeping the bulk of the profit, is it just the growers? Probably not, is it terrorists? Maybe, is it big time organised crime? Most likely, and anything that puts a dent in the profits of organised crime, and this is obviously the work of an international syndicate, is worth persuing. So do the job properly and and interrupt the international operations of organised crime.
