Here's a daft thing...

My wife's phone cover has a magnetic catch on it's flap. I was surprised when I saw a new 26 stuck to it. I tried a new baht coin and it stuck too.

None of the older coins in the piggy bank stuck though.

So...is it a sign of the economy when the Mint start making coinage with a ferrous metal content. OR are these coins fakes.

Surely not.

First of all...please refrain from calling me Shirley....I wound much rather be called Laverne or Lois or Lanna, anything but Shirley....

Secondly....what is a new 26...or even an old 26? I haven't ever heard of that. It does seem like it would be really difficult and costly to counterfeit coins...but...TIT, eh? pg

the OP is talking about the new 30 Baht coin issued by the Bank of Thailand for investment purposes. it is interest carrying, i.e. you pay now 26 Baht and you can redeem it for 30 Baht on may 1st, 2018.

Oooooooh. Okay. I wasn't aware of those...thanks for shedding some light on that. So...they have magnetable metal content? That's interesting for sure. How long have they been available? pg

No, actually, the OP wasn't referring to the thirty baht coin.

I was referring to a twenty-five stang and one baht coin that obviously have a ferrous content as they are attracted by magnets.

I'm still confused as to why

look how commodity prices of ferrous and non-ferrous metals have developed during the last several years and you might find an answer.

The Wiki page on Thai Baht says they first minted copper plated steel 25 satang and nickel plated steel 1 Baht coins in 2008.

Earlier coins first minted in 1987 were Aluminium bronze 25 satang and Cupronickel 1 Baht
