Similan Island to close May 1–Oct 31 for rehabilitation

PHANG NGA, 30 April 2012 (NNT) – The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has announced the closure of the Surin and Similan islands in Phang Nga province during May 1-October 31 for the purpose of natural rehabilitation as well as natural disaster risk prevention.

The DNP has announced that the Mu Ko Surin National Park and the Mu Ko Similan National Park will be closed to all tourist activities between May 1 and October 31. The closure of both islands is intended for the natural rehabilitation of the areas as well as the distribution of tourism to nearby travel destinations. Additionally, many of the park's areas are prone to natural disasters, which may be caused by the changing weather.

In the meantime, travelers can still visit other tourist destinations in Phang Nga province, such as Phang Nga Bay, Khao Tapu, Khao Phing Kan, Lod Cave, Khai Island, Thai Mueang Beach, Khao Lak Beach and Koh Kho Khao Island, among others. The Surin and Similan archipelagos are scheduled to be reopened in November 2012.

Thailand is set to propose the Similan Island to be registered as a world heritage.

Would help a bit more if they finally decided to do something about the fishermen who move in as soon as the Marine Parks close. They are already waiting only a few hundred meters away for the last dive boats to finish off their trips......
