I have a legit copy of Windows 7 installed on my laptop.

Now I'd like to use the DVD to install on my desktop, so I only need a new license, not another copy of the SW.

I checked the website and this says I cannot use the DVD I have, but must purchase another box !

is that true ? Isn't there any way to buy a license on-line ? (Hopefully cheaper ?)

Hi,

Windows volume licensing is available to users who own 5 computers or more, so it is indeed not possible and there is not much discount anyway. Microsoft does however have a special pricing policy for South east Asia, so you can buy at a very reasonable price.

To buy a SE Asia version of windows, at this discounted rate, is English still available?

As I know their discounted real DVDs, for sale in Thailand only, often only have Thai as an available language.

What do you consider to be a reasonable price ?

I paid 4,200 Baht for my Windows 7 Home Premium version, best price I could find recently at Fortune Town, Prices at Pantip are similiar. OEM versions are available for about 1000 Baht less.

On its' own website Microsoft offers this for USD 119.99. So where's the discount ?

However, I ALREADY HAVE THE SOFTWARE, I JUST NEED ANOTHER LICENSE ! (sorry for the caps).

BTW I have seen downloadable copies of Win 7 Home Premium offered on US websites for as low as USD 70.

Will that version work here in Thailand ? Anyone tried this ?

Its possible the downloaded Win 7 off the net might not be registrable from Thailand (or SE Asia). I don't know, but you can ask the supplier for clarification.

The OEM version has English, is registrable, patchable and free of malware. Worth the price.

MS has a "family" pack of 5 licenses, but much more than buying just 2. Designed for the family who shares.. wink.png

I permitted Windows to install security updates on my son in law's computer and discovered to my horror that he had a pirated version. I got around this using a 3d party software (Windows will not forgive this kind of sin) but I wonder how many computers 'with Windows' are really on Windows? It was bought at a reputable computer store near us, I won't even bother going back to complain.

Have you considered using Linux? I am 64 and I learnt how to use it in a week, I may go back to Linux soon.

If the Windows version you get is in another language you can change the language using Vistalizator.

to be fair if you had a legit copy there are ways to kill the authentication needed...there is no way i would shell out again

I don't want to MOVE my copy of windows to another PC.

I want to install an ADDITIONAL copy on another PC, and don't see why I need to buy another DVD when I already have one.

ALL I NEED IS ANOTHER LICENSE !

Since the media cost is pennies (it's the licence you're paying for) there is no (or very small) saving to be had by not buying another disk.

Just buy the disk and have done with it.

I run Windows 7 Ultimate and with this I am allowed to install the software on three systems. It is the same with my Office 2010 Professional and my Adobe Acrobat 9.

Am I missing something ??

To phone Microsoft and buy a Licence for Window 7 = 3,730 - 4,834 baht depending on Version.

To buy the retail box Windows 7 Pro Version = 7,448 baht.

you say there is no (or very small) saving ?? to me it is 1/2 price..

Myself a couple of years ago phoned and bought the licence, much much cheaper at the time + the lady helped me enter the code and activate Win 7, I did the same with Visa and with XP 8 years ago, it is just a simple phone call.

As said for one computer just buy a local English version OEM version. Thailand never had discount family price available that I am aware of. I bought a 3 system Home Premium from Microsoft USA directly while on promotion (believe about $150) and all installed fine here.

Which perhaps is why nobody buys retail box here (I have never even seen any for sale). This is OEM country for legal software purchase. Although it did seem Windows 7 was less of a difference than in previous versions). As the software life seems to be about the same as computer does not make much sense to pay much extra for the retail box.

The installation will work fine re-using this disk of course, and the likelihood is that Windows will activate perfectly well a second time using the original key. In which case: problem solved.

Should the second online activation fail it would normally be possible to call the MS activation hotline and ask for activation, explaining that you had to reinstall due to a dead hard drive etc. They are very generous.

If neither of those activation procedures work then Windows will prompt you to buy the licence online directly from MS and the price will vary according to the location you give as your home address. If necessary I recommend checking that online price against the cost of an SEAsia OEM disk/licence and acting accordingly.

I had purchased Win 7 Pro 32 bit and then upgraded my computer. I decided to go for the 64 bit. The dealer told me that I could use the same key for the 64 bit. It worked fine.

You mentioned you have a Laptop DVD version of Win7.

I have tired to install Win7 using Laptop DVD disk and sometimes I have an error pertaining to "This DVD is only allowed for HP computers". or whatever brand of laptop you have.

If you have installed Win7 successfully onto your other computer, just follow the above help to, Call In or Order Online, for your new license.
