It's quite right - Shinawatra is on the run from a prison sentence here in Thailand. That's what this Reconciliation Bill hopes to achieve ultimately - pardons granted, against the decisions of the courts, who make rulings in the name of the King.

That's why everyone's getting all up tight about it.

Let's really make no mistake - Taksin is a convicted criminal, trying to fund his way into a pardon.

Don't forget 46 billion. With the pardon, he'll get that money back as well (most probably).

The PAD did not 'destroy' parliament house, as you put it, and for the zillionth time: They organised a demonstration at the airport when they'd had wind of the imminent arrival of Taksin. They were then forced into the terminal by the red shirt contingent paid for by Taksin, and the Taksin friendly police.

Even the most blinkered of people know full well that the charges against Thaksin were not trumped up. This is a lie put out by Robert Amsterdam and the other PR advisors to the Thaksin clan. I have a post elsewhere which details exactly what has happened in Chiang Mai since PTP came back in. Its opened the flood gate to money making schemes for the Shinawatras and their allies. At the end of the day that's what it is all about. 'Democracy' and 'Reconciliation' are just words that have been framed by PR people in order to build support for Thaksin's evil plans. Again look for other posts by me about the meaning of Democracy. Thaksin does not want or need Democracy - its not his style and its not understood by Thais anyway; Reconciliation is just a silly game but you can see from the behaviour of the PTP that they're into confrontation, not reconciliation. Its a bit like a couple splitting and going to marriage guidance. Its just a show but underneath they absolutely don't want it, they just want to split. Unfortunately when this applies to a country it affects the lives of many ordinary people but Thaksin, the leading elite person in Thailand, wouldn't care about this. With his billions he can do what he wants anyway. So less of this trumped up stuff, please. The judiciary were balanced enough to dismiss some charges against him but they played an even hand and some stuck. Thaksin was too much of a coward to serve his time.

Actually, if the guy had any brains at all he would have served his time (in comfort no doubt) and then handed over his 49 billion without a struggle on the condition that it was used to provide education and health services for the poor and to put into the pot for a major anti-corruption drive. That would have made him a hero to all and given him rthe redemption that he so craves. Thailand would now be at peace, not on the brink of civil war .

Interesting fella this TS, his old man was rich and sponsored his son in some of his early business ventures, all of which failed miserably. Then, when he had learned the basic rules of corruption, all his businesses suddenly took off like a rocket. Trouble is he then joined the wrong club, upset the local Mafia and, worst of all, broke the rules of the Illuminate (giving too much to the poor), so they just had to get him.

There is no way this is going away, the Reds don't understand how the world works and another coup may be the result.

This government came together in the first place to benefit the criminal on the run. It was never about reconciliation or government or helping the people. It was all about getting the thug back home and bringing back the billions to him. If this law came into effect with just one amendment, and that is it doesn't apply to the scumbag, I think reconciliation will take it's first step forward.

I'm usually against mobs like these but in this case, good show Yellow Shirts!

There is of course more to this than just the intervention of the 'yellow shirts', as other groups are also opposed to this total travesty of justice.

I think there is no doubt that these groups have no option but to bring these proceedings to a halt, and indeed, they are doing Thailand an enormous favour. Has anyone stopped for one moment to consider the mayhem that would be likely to ensue if they managed to push the reconciliation bill through and Thaksin arrives back in Bangkok, waving inanely like some crazy North Korean leader!

There would definitely have been dark days ahead if they had managed to push the issue through this afternoon, and now Somsak is clearly s***ting himself, given that he has postponed (although I note he uses the word "cancelled") the reading of the bill "indefinitely".

One final point, is there any incident that takes place in Thailand that does not lead to Jatuporn suggesting that a coup is about to take place? And how come he gets press space? He's not an MP, just a criminal.

Thai parliament defers contentious debate

BANGKOK, June 1, 2012 (AFP) - Thai "Yellow" protesters blocked parliament on Friday, forcing a debate on disputed reconciliation plans to be shelved amid signs of rising tensions in the bitterly divided nation.

Proposals aimed at healing the rifts that have seen Thailand shaken repeatedly by bloody civil unrest since a coup in 2006, have provoked fury among opposition MPs who fear they will open the door for the return of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Lawmakers were unable to enter the building as parliament was due to open, with around two thousand ultra-royalist, anti-Thaksin "Yellow Shirts" and their affiliates massing outside for a third day running.

"House speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont sent a message to MPs' phones saying that the meeting will be postponed indefinitely until the situation is improving," said Pormpong Nopparit, spokesman of the ruling party.

The Yellows had warned they will try to enter parliament in an effort to disrupt any vote on the bill -- a threat that carries weight from a group that have helped topple three governments of Thaksin and his allies.

AFP photographers said riot police were lining up around the compound, which was blocked off with cement barricades and barbed wire.

The protests have been called by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), the Yellow's official name, who are powerful players in Thailand's colour-coded politics.

Backed by the Bangkok-based elite they are arch-rivals of Thaksin's "Red Shirts", whose massive rallies against a previous government in 2010 ended in a bloody crackdown.

Four reconciliation proposals are up for debate, threatening to further polarise politics in the country that has become increasingly divided in the years since Thaksin was toppled by royalist generals.

Three of the potential bills include amnesties that some fear could be used by the government -- led by Thaksin's sister Yingluck Shinawatra -- to usher back the divisive former premier, who lives abroad to avoid a jail term for corruption and terrorism charges relating to violence in 2010.

Activity on the streets has been mirrored within parliament in recent days, with police stepping in to protect the house speaker on Thursday from bundles on paper thrown by opposition Democrat MPs angry at his attempt to schedule the debate for Friday.

The Democrats have been close to the Yellows in the past and came to power after 2008 rallies by the movement that culminated with the seizure of two Bangkok airports, stranding more than 300,000 travellers and causing crippling economic damage.
