Phuket woman loses husband, then killed in hit-and-run

Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: -- A Phuket woman was killed instantly while trying to cross Thepkrasattri Road in Srisoonthorn last night when she was struck by an unidentified car traveling at high speed.

Thalang Police Duty Officer Somkid Khaosang received the accident report at about 9:45pm.

Col Somkid and Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers arrived at the scene to find the deceased woman lying on the northbound carriageway of Thepkrasattri Road near Srisoonthorn Temple.

Police identified the woman as 49-year-old Wanida T.N. Oun [sic] from Mai Khao and assessed that she died from massive head trauma immediately following the strike. From interviews with witnesses, Col Somkid learned that Ms Wanida had been struck as she attempted to cross the road from the direction of the temple to a grocery store opposite.

“It was raining at the time and she tried to cross quickly but was hit by the car, which then failed to stop and drove off,” Col Somkid said.

“Locals told me it was a black car, but they don’t know what type and no one could read the license plate number,” he added.

Resident’s explained that Ms Wanida’s husband died a few days earlier. His body was still at Srisoonthorn Temple ready for a funeral ceremony planned for today.

Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers took Ms Wanida’s body to Thalang Hospital to await formal identification and collection by relatives.
