PHUKET: -- Police will target “likely” venues in a crackdown on gambling in Phuket during the Euro 2012 football tournament, which kicked off last night and culminated in a 1-1 draw between Poland and Greece.

“We received an order [from the Police Region 8 Headquarters] about two weeks ago instructing us to target those areas likely to be venues for gambling,” Phuket Police Deputy Commander Peerayut Karajedee told the Phuket Gazette.

“All places showing live matches will be targeted, especially those near schools,” Col Peerayut said.

“Anybody found gambling will be arrested and charged,” he added.

The final match of Euro 2012 will take place on July 1, at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine.

The predicable monotony of this repetitive BS just wears everyone down to the point they no longer care…. With the exception of a one or two public arrests, nothing will be done…

Legalise and tax gambling, then those who enforce the law can concentrate on greater issues. It would also remove a significant portion of hypocrisy as those tasked with enforcing the law are the same people flouting it to the greatest degree…

[...]“Anybody found gambling will be arrested and charged,” he added.

..the Phuket Gazette is not quite correct: "“Anybody found gambling will be arrested and/or charged,” he added. Those arrested may be released upon the payment of a small fee and the handover of their betting slip.

I expect a little more accuracy by the Phuket Gazette when reporting.

Would this really help. There's a legal lottery but many illegal too.

They couldn't possibly legalize all gambling in Thailand.

Too many poor people would be drawn to gambling if the likes of small casinos were to open up all over the place.

The crime rate would fly through the roof.

They may however open Las Vegas type casinos that most Thais couldn't afford to go to.afford to go to.

Thaksin was all for it before he went on his holidays.

I could also see internet betting being legalized, Thousand of Thais already bet on the footy on the Internet, the secondary URL for Asian bookmakers unlike the UK ones are not blocked.

I think the balance that the Thai attitude has, where gambling is concerned, is quite effective as it stands.

They block some/most sites, they impose small fines now and then but for the best part turn a blind eye.

At the same time they issue warnings that make people think twice about gambling illegally and the machine just keep rolling on at an acceptable level.

Legalize it and it would spread like releasing a plague

I thought we weren't allowed to talk about gambling here.

All Thais know and most expats and even a few tourists know that the police are responsible for the gambling and take all the profits - what a waste of time even reporting this.

They've been deformed that way since birth, don't expect change anytime soon.
