Decision on TRCT proposals due by year-end: Yongyuth

BANGKOK: -- The government will need time to study the final report from the Truth for Reconciliation Commission of Thailand before deciding what to do next, Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit said yesterday.

"I don't want to jump to any conclusions and will make a formal announcement once the TRCT report has been scrutinised," he said.

Yongyuth added that the government would factor in other suggestions, such as those made by Pheu Thai MP Weng Tojirakarn, as well as findings of the TRCT report before it makes its next move. He said the authorities should implement some of the TRCT's suggestions by the end of the year.

He said most issues, such as the charter rewrite, reconciliation moves and implementing TRCT findings should be resolved no later than the end of this year. Yongyuth said he did not anticipate any problems in vetting and implementing the TRCT suggestions despite fierce opposition from the red shirts.

The deputy PM said the government would decide in due course how it would put the TRCT's findings into action.

He also pointed out that in some issues, the government had gone well beyond the TRCT's recommendations. For instance, victims of political strife were paid Bt7 million in compensation each whereas the TRCT proposed that they be given Bt3 million.

He also dismissed reports that the United Nations had called on the government to comply with the TRCT report, saying he was not aware of UN involvement in the matter.

Meanwhile, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said he believed the TRCT should meet with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and submit its final report directly to her. He added that he was worried about the government's unclear stance on what should be done with the report.

Should the government choose to ignore the TRCT's recommendations, it would not bode well for the reconciliation process, he said.

Chart Thai Pattana Party chief adviser Banharn Silapa-archa said he backed the TRCT's ideas on mending fences.

However, he said the justice system should be allowed to run its course in relation to individuals involved in the political strife.

Commenting on the red shirts' rejection of the report, he said Thailand could not be mired in animosity forever and hoped all sides would eventually resolve their differences.
