I would appreciate any help. Those are the two options. The vehicle will regularly carry 3 plus one child in a car seat, with the occasional additional two people. We are within Bangkok and only normal driving, nothing off the beaten path to deal with.

I keep going back and forth which will be the better option for a family, so I am wondering if there are any opinions here about the options?

Thanks

If you have a good look and a drive of the Fortuner and Innova, the one that suits you will become clear. They both have pros and cons so it mostly depends on your preferences.

The 2.5L Fortuner is about 200,000 baht more than the mid level auto Innova. The 3.0L 2WD Fortuner is better but it costs about 350,000 baht more.

Performance of the Fortuner 3.0L D4D diesel is very good, it feels stronger and Fuel cost would be less than the 2.0L petrol Innova. If you are going to use the car for short, low speed trips a lot, the Fortuners with "clean" turbo diesels and Particle filter (DPF) may not be ideal.

Dimensions of the Fortuner are a little larger but they feel a lot bigger than the Innova. The Innova sloping bonnet and visibility make feel smaller and easier to maneuver. The Innova has good interior space for what it is, but it looks bland, IMO. Both Fortuner and Innova use a lot of Hilux components so they are tough but not particularly refined.

Safety features are just OK on both with the 3.0L Fortuner slightly better. Innova and Fortuner have ABS and Driver Airbags above the basic versions but the 2.5L Fortuner and Innova miss out on passenger Airbag, stability control (VSC), Brake Assist and EBD. Don't think the Innova has been crash tested or at least results not published. The Fortuner's Hilux cousin has OK crash test results. I don't think either have Child seat anchors.

Resale value of Innova seems OK but likely to be lower than the very high levels Fortuners achieve.

My opinion is the the 3.0L Fortuner is bigger and better, especially for highway driving. If you want a smaller Toyota with +5 seats for city driving the Innova is OK especially since Toyota dumped the Wish.

thank you for the response. I think the 2.7 is the budget we are in for the Fortuner. I know the third row will be horrible, but how is the second row as far as leg room for a non-thai height person?

My company has some Innovas in Indonesia and Fortuners in Thailand. The Innova 2nd row seats and leg room is OK for me (1.8m) with (shorter) Indonesian drivers. A tall driver and a tall passenger behind would be tighter but OK.

Despite the exterior appearance, the Fortuner interior space is pretty similar, except maybe a bit wider. This is probably partly due to both cars using the same wheel base. The fold out 3rd row arrangement is also similar.

The Innova ride is a little less choppy than the Fortuner we have but I read Toyota improved something on 2012 models. The Innova gives the 2 row passenger a better view with out the Fortuners forward sloping C pillar.

Fortuner and Innova are heavy cars with petrol versions not particularly powerful and low geared. Not sure about the Fortuner 2.7 but the Innova is best driven sedately, it gets noisy and thirsty if driven hard.

Have you any knowledge of the current waiting list for Innovas ? My wife gave up after 9 months and sold the deposit. Apparently they are booked for a long time because of being bought for taxis.

some outstanding observations with these posts...I've been a passenger in both on roads in Vietnam and in saudi and I like the Fortuner better as it is built like a tank with the associated secure feeling when it comes to a collision result...but the Fortuner is built like a truck and the Innova has more of a passenger car feel with better handling and this makes a difference when you're behind the wheel...

I am considering both when I retire and splash out on new wheels...good thread...I thought about a V8 Land Cruiser as I drove a smaller one thru the Chapare jungle in Bolivia but that's way beyond the budget...there was a 1000ft drop on one side as we negotiated a land slide area and the 'tank effect' of the Land Cruiser kicked in nicely...I felt that even if we ended up at the bottom of the gorge we would still be able to walk away...abysmal driving conditions with little visability as we approached 'la cumbre', a high mountain pass when once over we would drop rapidly into the Cochabamba valley...and I had been drinking all day...there was a road house near the pass and we stopped for a meal and I let my associate take over the driving...

I saw an innova on an energy reform LPG system yesterday. I don;t know how well the motor handles LPG, but seems like a cheap alternative to the fortuner. It might ride a bit better also, though will lack the punch of the diesel.
