Dtac Or True For The On Nut / Sukhumvit Area In Bangkok

Hello,

I live in On Nut and generally spend my time in the Sukhimvit area durring work time and afterwords.

I'm planning on getting a new smart phone and will be using the internet. Based on people's experiences, I'm wondering who provides better connectivity and speed. True or dtac? I've asked several people and get different answers...so I'm wondering what your experinces are with this. My 3G iPad with a True sim have worked pretty well around town, but there are times when the connection is terribly slow ... I just give up and try later. I've wondered if dtac is better...

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

P.S. The True data/phone plans seem to be much more expensive than dtac. I wonder if dtac dings people with hidden charges later on...

Can't speak to which is faster/better, True or DTAC, in your area, but I have been with DTAC for around 4 years on voice and/or data plans--and I have never been hit with hidden/surprise charges. I live in western Bangkok (Khet Talingchan) and I consistently get good 3G speeds in this part of town....and here at my home (a single family home moobaan...no tall structures) I can get a 3G download speed of over 8Mb. But as you know, 3G speeds can vary greatly from location to location...and in the central/highrise part of Bangkok where you live I expect speeds can indeed vary greatly due to the high number of users and high structures. I know when I make weekly runs over to central Bangkok and drive the entire length of Sathon Rd (both directions)...my speeds are all over the map...from OK 3G speeds to low Edge speeds. But just as soon as I go over the Chao Phraya River to western Bangkok the speed jumps way up.

It might be best to get both a TrueMove H and DTAC/Happy SIM, these cost ~ 50 baht, then experiment with both for a few days to see which one meets your requirements. Both have 49 baht daily plans, DTAC/Happy also have a weekly plan, which make experimenting relatively cost effective.

I use both DTAC/Happy and TrueMove H all over Bangkok, and in several other locales, and generally find DTAC/Happy to offer better mobile broadband performance and they also offer better overall account management. In the same location with the same phone I might see 8 Mbps/3Mbps with DTAC on average and 4 Mbps/300 Kbps with TrueMove H, not that upload speed is a huge requirement for me. Lately I've been getting double-digit DL speed with DTAC, perhaps because of a new baseband I flashed recently? With TrueMove H you can, or will be forced to, roam onto the legacy TrueMove 1800 MHz network occasionally which only supports 2G.
