I already have a Samsung Series 6, 40" TV, an old LCD model

but I crave something bigger.

But what size to go for?

Weight is an issue as it hangs on the wall, the existing TV is 23kg.

LED seems to meet the weight requirement nicely

Not really worried or interested in 3D.

What recommendations??

Thanks in advance

Don't worry about the weight - the modern TVs are lighter... (my 55" Samsung hangs on ultra slim wall mounts in a wooden backboard - I estimate its weight to be about 10 kgs).

The size is simply about taste and how much it might over-power the room versus how much you'll use it.

Now that TV's protrude less than 3cm from the wall they are merely a dark fitting on the wall when not in use.

The increase in HD broadcast and movies makes a larger TV screen a more viable option compared to a number of years ago.

Edit: I Upgraded from the Samsung 7 46" LCD to the 55" LED. Its a better TV - I'm happy with the upgrade (a year ago)... but the quality of input (i.e. blu-ray movies and surround sound) becomes more important to obtain the true viewer experience. Its still just a TV though, nice to have a nice one when you use it to watch proper movie.

The bigger the better so go for 50 inch at least. There seems to be a big price hike between 50 and 55 and even more above 55 so 50 inch is the most screen for your money. Saw a new 50 inch plasma in Macro Pattaya for 18,000.

Plasma is weighty.

I would go Samsung Series 7 55" LED and should weigh in at under 20Kg with wall mount.

Also the Smart TV and Camera can add to the experience, deffinetely worth the money.

Pay double for something your android phone can do better ....... have you ever used a smart tv, smart bit is crap.

I got the series 8 55" Samsung.

End of last model run out.

Love it. we sit about 3.5m from it. Not too big at all really.

But you really got to pair a big TV up with reciever and speakers to fully appreciate it.

Otherwise your just going half cocked. vision plus sound for a better experience

Wouldnt go anything under 50 these days.. 50 is the new 42..

I don't think that is true at all. The bigger the screen, the more magnified the flaws.

As someone else has said, the crucial factor is how far you will be sitting from the screen.

This is true. True vision SD looks terrible. Hd looks awesome.

Downloading movies in 1080p and even 720p is really good.

Avi sd is doable but better for the laptop.

I personally think it is a great time to buy an LCD. They are so amazingly cheap relative to the LED's. I personally dont "see" the benefits so far as to justify the price difference, but if you like the look of the LED, you gotta take one I guess. I think the LCD bravias are the best looking, best value for the money right now.

Sony currently make very poor Tvs.

I guess it depends how often you watch it... My TV has not been turned on in 4 days, so the LED may be considered a waste by some. However when we do watch a movie the quality is noticeable (but a quality LCD would also be good).

I agree with the 'Smart' Comment - I've never used the Smart function on my TV, I don't even know what it does...

I have my TV connected up to a Mac Mini computer and stream a lot of content through that.

Well, that is up for debate of course. As far as picture goes, I like sonys as winners right now. There is this trend going too bright, and too sharp, and it doesn't look good imo. But the sonys are looking great, esp when you consider where you will be watching, prob in a dark room. But then you also must consider how they set them for display - anyway, i'm an obvious bravia +1. id go samsung as my second choice.... really just a matter of what looks better to you. i think most others are a cut below those 2 personally (just opinion).

Thanks for the input

@CrazyKid

I am sitting about 4m away so no problems with the size

@Richard_smith

My satellite TV source is HD for several channels

and even the SD ones are upscaled.

BTW, not True

A lot of what I watch comes from torrents so I get to choose

I have had 2 Samsung LCD's so far, 32" then 40" and like the colours,

Sony is too garish for my taste

Plasma too weighty and power hungry

Not worried about the "Smart" aspects or the 3D.

Now to get out and look at local prices and what is on offer.

One thing with movies, they are many times displayed in wide screen format. Which makes the picture seem a bit smaller, even though it is wide.

We have a 40" that we are going to upgrade to either a 50 or 55". Not sure yet. We sit about 3M from the screen.
