Thailand and Peru agree to enhance business interactions

Thailand and Peru have agreed to enhance business interaction between entrepreneurs of the two countries.

The agreement was reached on February 27 at a discussion between Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon and his counterpart from Peru, Mr. Oscar Maurtua de Romana at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. Mr Maurtua paid an official visit to Thailand as guest of the Foreign Minister from February 25 to 27, 2006.

At the discussion, Mr. Kantathi asked the Peruvian side to increase the importation of Thai rice to Peruvian local market and to facilitate Thai business sector to invest in Peru. Foreign Minister Maurtua agreed with his Thai counterpart to enhance the business interaction between the entrepreneurs of the two countries. He invited Thai businessmen to consider investing in energy exploration along the Peruvian coastline as well as in the construction of hotels to prepare for the APEC Summit to be held in Lima in 2008. The Peruvian side also welcomed Thai businessmen to invest in restaurant business as well as management of forest and ports in Peru.

Foreign Minister Maurtua praised the close and cordial bilateral relations between Thailand-Peru, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic relations in 2005. Mrs. Eliane Karp-Toledo, the First Lady of Peru, who paid a visit to Thailand early this month was also very much impressed with the Thai culture and had a fond memories about Thailand.

The two Foreign Ministers also exchanged views on Thailand-Peru Free Trade Area Agreement (FTA) negotiations. Both Ministers signed the early harvest protocol during the APEC Summit in Busan last November and hoped that the upcoming 8th round meeting would lead to the successful conclusion of the said agreement.

Foreign Minister Maurtua raised the issue on the establishment of the Royal Thai Embassy in Peru and was informed by his Thai counterpart that this matter should be settled during the next fiscal year. Concerning the candidacy of Deputy Prime Minster Mr. Surakiart Sathirathai to the post of the United Nations Secretary-General, the Peruvian Foreign Minister mentioned that Peru, as a current member of the UN Security Council , was impressed with the qualification of the Thai candidate and was of the view that the next UN Secretary General should be the Asia’s turn.

After the meeting, there was a ceremony to confer the Royal Decoration of Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand which H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously bestowed to Foreign Minister Maurtua. The two Foreign Ministers also presided over the signing ceremony of the Air Transportation Agreement between Thailand and Peru, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Technical Cooperation between Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency and Peruvian International Cooperation Agency, and the MOU on Cooperation between Dusit Thani College of Thailand and Le Cordon Bleu Peru. The Thai Foreign Minister and his wife then hosted a luncheon in honour of his Peruvian counterpart and his wife.

In the evening, the two Foreign Ministers attended a reception to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of Thailand-Peru Diplomatic relations at the Four Seasons Hotel.
