Filling Holes/cracks In Exterior Wall Of Condo

Recommended Posts

I'm not good at DIY - I'm trying to fill holes (from a drill) and small cracks in the walls of my condo. It's an exterior wall (brick?) and Homepro and homemart don't sell Polyfilla (wikipedia calls it spackling paste) so I used the only thing they sold 'LANKOPUTTY' Acrylic Wall Putty. Does anyone know why this stuff shrinks into the holes and cracks? Am I doing something wrong? It says interior and exterior. I never had this issue with pollyfilla.

This must be a common issue - what do you guys do? Do you just keep on refilling?

Thanks

Sorry, just to add I used the wrong word - I meant external wall - I'm filling holes and cracks on the interior side of the external wall, not the exterior.

I've had no problem with Bosny Wall Putty http://www.bosny.com/che_wallputty.html which is similar stuff to the Lankoputty, ours came from our local builder's merchant place.

Try thinning the filler slightly with water before use, and don't put on too thick a layer at once.

The Maxxi website http://www.maxxi.co.th/category/maxxi-store/mortar-casting/rendering says Lankoputty won't crack, evidently your experience begs to differ, old stock maybe?

If the crack is too wide (and deep) the putty will 'sink' in first.

First job is to create some kind of base, then gently sand it and fill it up again.

That should do the job.

we have the same problem with our house from the time everything had settled, hair line cracks appearing,we use the bosny wall putty[home pro] it has done the job on most but the cracks still appear every so often.some of the bigger ones i have used a tile cutter to make the cracks wider so that the filler takes a stronger hold.just noticed one that has cracked again [about a yr] i will mix a drop of water with the putty this time.

Thanks for all the replies everyone,

The cracks are very minor but lankoputty still sinks in - I have to go back over which is very time consuming and Pollyfilla doesn't do this. Yes, the drill holes are deep, I need to go back over over three times - I don't know why acrylic putty is like this - pollyfilla just requires one application and then you sand it.

I have used TOA Acrylic Filler and find it very good. I have the same gallon (?) can for almost 2 years now and I can still use it (have to go around the crunchy stuff - but still good otherwise). I think any good filler with a deep crack or hole will sink in a bit. Maybe overfill and then lightly sand off after it dries - after the first application. IE: deep cracks, etc. will need 2-3 applications to look good.
