donkeykong
So where are the 'Grand' and 'International artists? As usual, they're kidding themselves. The usual traffic snarl ups guaranteed, along with the influx of teenage speed dealers and wannabe wangsters with home-made guns. Ahhh culture. wonderful ain't it! How about a Grand International Lady Coconut Festival 2007.... now there's an idea!

Pattaya could be easily able to put on a fantastic event IF local big time sponsors got behind it. Despite teething pains, Samui will probably evolve to a world class event with major local farang sponsors getting behind it already and Pattaya could do as well, or even better (or be left behind to enjoy the seemingly # 1 sport WHINGING!) -stop whining, support it and they will come

Some people would have you all believe pattaya is the only in place to be. You raise a fairly common perception IceCubes (based on the history) BUT maybe miss the larger evolving point- Pattaya has LOADS of capital pouring into it like never before and the times, they are a-changing, if one chooses to see it or not. Now, you can have a fantastic "family" vacation or lifestyle in and around Pattaya if one doesn't choose to spend days on end starting up at chrome poles or seeking pre-conceived, therefor self fullfilling conceptions; In the future, Patters will have world class music events and more, absolutely no doubts. Just my opinion, cheers!

Why is Pattaya unable to produce class acts?Barry You're a funny one Barry. There was almost nobody that showed up at that Samui festival, they had to get people in for free to make it look busy and make a little on drinks, that's how popular these bands were on Samui. The line up was a complete farce with absolute has beens. UB 40 would've been an exciting band to see 20 years ago or so and that was the 'youngest' band around. In contrast the Pattaya festival shows the most exciting and young (and also older) Thai bands around right now from various musical backgrounds. This is something I would visit and pay money for, not some overaged has been bands who're glad to get a gig in Samui.

UB 40 would've been an exciting band to see 20 years ago or so and that was the 'youngest' band around. I saw them a few years ago, 20 yrs after I'd seen them before, and they were STILL amazing.... world class, world famous! In contrast the Pattaya festival shows the most exciting and young (and also older) Thai bands around right now from various musical backgrounds. This is something I would visit and pay money for, not some overaged has been bands who're glad to get a gig in Samui. Hardly. There's not a single name on that long list that would be known to anyone outside Thailand. Yes they'll get a large crowd of young Thais down here for a day, but thats hardly adding much to Pattaya. They're not staying in hotels. The venue is a no booze zone. No raising of Pattaya's 'international profile'. It just seems to be Pattaya Council's 'function of the month'. As a positive suggestion... Wouldn't it be better if the entire event was organised and sponsored by the HARD ROCK HOTEL chain? That 'hotel' is only their 2nd in the world, and they have every reason to promote it (and the brand). Hard Rock also jumps on the music bandwagon with all that memorabilia from world famous names, most of whom have never been here and probably have never even heard of Pattaya? Throw in Singha or Chang sponsorship and a decent ad campaign in Europe and USA, and maybe this thing would have a chance? Not sure exactly what, if ANYTHING, that the T.A.T. has EVER done overseas to promote Pattaya. I can honestly say I never saw ANY commercial ad for the place. Never watched any travel program visit Pattaya either. Seems that most people find the place by word-of-mouth recommendations, other than the ruskies currently here, who seem to arrive in large numbers, sardine-packed in oversize family crates on dodgy container ships. Plenty of Thais like western rock and roll, along with a wide range of western country music. If Pattaya is to become a world class family resort, the local government will have to start to bring in more international entertainment. Mobi
' alt='blockquote>'>Because it don't look to good in the western news papers. That’s why they won't come, plus the revenue is way to low for them. Even in this world class resort of Pattaya. Have a nice day. Speaking as one who used to be in the farang concert promtion busines in Thailand some years ago, I can speak with some knowledge on the subject. First and foremost it is a very expensive business bringing acts and their road crews, management, wives/gf's and their equipment half way round the world to perform in Asia. Add to that their hotel demands , PA demands, green room demands etc etc - the list just goes on and on. Quite often their fees are are relaitively small part of the overall cost. Then on top of all that, they always want a percentage of the gross, just to make sure the promotor doesn't make too much profit - even though the promoter is taking all of the risks, including stuff like irrevocable L.C's up front. What all this means is that the only viable way to bring acts to Asia is on a tour of several countries in the region (singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia etc) and then going on to places like Japan or across to Australia. Most such tours are planned 2 years or more in advance. Strangely enough, in the old days, part of the package we used to attract acts to Thailand, was a week's holiday in Pattaya, thrown in for nothing. They used to love it, and some even used to jam with local bands. (I can remember, Scorpions, Blondie, and going back even further Ossi Bissa really loving Pattaya.) An enterprising city official should try and grab an act that is scheduled to perform in Bangkok, and see if he can't add an extra date in Pattaya for a small extra fee. The bands and promotors love these added dates as they are all clear profit. I really don't think many acts would worry about their image by performing in Pattaya. I think most would be happy if the conditions were right. Regarding bands like UB40 - yes I'm afraid they are 'has beens' and you can certainly find other acts in this catagory who will come quite cheaply and will be prepared to compromise on their requirements and fees etc. Maybe this would be the best route to take. The festival last october IMO was an excellently organized event with chances for all PATTAYA'S own musicans to perform, the line up this one has now should be held elsewhere UNLESS its tailored for farangs also. sriracha john
Just when you thought it couldn't get worse: Music festival will be no-alcohol zone in interests of public safety Grand Pattaya International Music Festival 2006, to be held from March 17 to 19 along Beach Road, will be an alcohol-free zone in the interests of public safety. A meeting was held on March 3 at Pattaya district office to discuss the safety aspects of the event, chaired by Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh and attended by representatives of Banglamung and Pattaya police stations and other safety related organizations. Ronakit said that the festival would be staged along Beach Road to Bali Hai Pier and that the road will be closed from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Safety measures will need implementing for the three performance stages in terms of traffic and youths who come looking to disturb the peace. The city has already coordinated with the police and military police who will be on duty throughout the event. Alcohol cannot be brought into the areas of the three stages in order to provide safety to the many tourists who are expected to attend. Stages will be set up at Soi 6, Beach Road, Soi 9 Beach Road and at Bali Hai Pier. Pol Lt Maj Pramote Ngampradit, deputy superintendent of crime suppression at Banglamung said the areas would be divided into zones of responsibility. Search checkpoints will be set up to carry out body frisks for weapons, starting at Sukhumvit Road and throughout the stretch where the concert is to be held. - Pattaya Mail ----------------------------------------------------------------------- If a concert falls flat on its face in the middle of the woods, does it make a sound? Sorry but i'll be in BKK for the blues festival and back sunday. Dave - if you look at TAT stats, Thai tourists outweigh foreigners by 50% - so its hardly a waste in their eyes. One of theair (TAT) aims is to encourage DOMESTIC tourism - i.e stop outflows of baht into foreign currency. This fits that aim perfectly. Not that I am agreeing with this - but you cant fault their logic, based on these requirements.
