I read from the news that Thailand warns of state of emergency if the demostrations turn violent. I wonder if it is still safe to go Bangkok now? I'm going to Bangkok the first time with a bunch of friends without a tour package so I'm kind of worried for our safety. We are going to Bangkok on the 23rd to 28th March 2006

We're all hoping that it doesn't turn violent blursotong... in fact I'm driving to Bangkok tomorrow to visit the Embassy.

I'd say with a fair degree of confidence that if you stay away from the well publicised demonstrations, you won't notice any difference.

If anything, tomorrow's rally will be the decider... if anything's going to happen, it will happen then.

Fingers crossed... :o

Hmm, now is a good time to register with your Embassy if you haven't already done so, just in case something happens. Some Embassy websites have a register function, whereas others require you to telephone or turn up in person.

no problems... it would be common sense to stay away from certain areas where there are protestors, but so far it has been well behaved... Bangkok for the tourist is still fantastic..

I don't know what country you are from but I doubt that the UK embassy will be offering much assistance to us here in LoS if the "sh*t hits the fan"

Touch wood, I'd say you've got nothing whatsoever to worry about. Unless you're in the thick of the Sanam Luang/protest areas, Bangkok hardly appears to be any different.

JD, are you suggesting tomorrow owing to the pro-TRT groups arriving here?

I was actually talking about yesterday Insight, but now that that has proven to be peaceful affair, the arrival of the pro-TRT groups will no doubt add some fuel to any cinders that may be smouldering. Let's all hope that violence does not rear its ugly head.

Whilst you don't give your country of residence BKK may well be safer than there. At least thus far in recent memory BKK hasn't been the target of terrorists, suffered a major natural disaster or an extreme disease outbreak (am thinking of SARS in safe Hong Kong).

I live here with my wife and we are hardly shaking with fear as I walk the streets. Just don't hang around the major protest areas (ie the majority of BKK is fine). It you're really worried you could always just head straight out of town on arriving in BKK (eg catch the train to Ayuttaya from the airport). Am not sure how registering with my embassy would help me if I got caught up in a riot though - do I wave the slip at them??? :o
