Taiwan, Thai TV stations sorry for Thatcher photo gaffes

TAIPEI, April 9, 2013 (AFP) - A Taiwanese cable news channel apologised Tuesday for running a photo of Queen Elizabeth II when reporting the death of Margaret Thatcher, while a Thai station showed a photo of actress Meryl Streep.

Taiwan's CTI TV, in footage Monday night, showed the queen dressed in a green coat and waving at the crowd with a caption reading "Former British prime minister Thatcher passed away, the Iron Lady is missed".

In Thailand, army-run Channel 5 TV station also apologised after it showed a photo of Streep playing Thatcher in the 2011 semi-biographical film "The Iron Lady" during its report on the death of the former premier.

"We apologise for the mistake over the use of the photo during the report on Margaret Thatcher which caused misunderstanding. Our team will try harder and be more careful," it wrote on its official Facebook page.

A source at the channel said the job of finding the picture had been outsourced to another company.

"The news anchor noticed the mistake and solved the problem by saying her story was made into a Hollywood movie played by Meryl Streep," he said.

Thatcher, dubbed the "Iron Lady," died of a stroke on Monday in London aged 87.

This is funny.
All orientals look the same to europeans, I guess ditto europeans to orientals.

Maybe the taiwanese thought the queen was happy to see the end of Thatcher.......?

Did the Brits complain? If the BBC had done something similar concerning Thailand the outrage would be huge.

Remember, for many Thai's the world starts and ends at the borders of Thailand. But Thai's are really interested in Korean music and skin whitening products.

LOL, you just couldn't make this stuff up.

Normally its the one that percieves themselves

rightly or wrongly, as lower in stature that is offended the most.

I doubt that the UK even noticed.

But TL, being an asian country (saving face and all)

and a developing country at that,

would have greatly lost face.

If the same situation had happened between TL and Japan, or SK, I think the same would have applied to a lesser degree. Japan, nor Korea would have cared much. The reverse would have caused TL some shame but not as much since it was with another asian country.

Now if it was Meryl Streep who'd died or the Queen of England , I would have been upset !

Makes one wonder if there may be a copyright violation as well, perhaps as a materr of course, thus the "outsource" face and litigation saver.

Good job it wasn't a photo of Arther Scargil in drag. But he is 'not for turning'

They could have chosen a Spitting Image puppet but that would have been too accurate.

This raises interesting questions about copyright and usage rights

What's that?

for the photos

The Saturday Night Live skit about learning Thai springs to mind. What an outrage of cultural insensitivity that was.

Mistaking Baroness Thatcher for Meryl Streep isn't insensitive?

I remember the days of Arthur Scargil. The UK needed a leader like Margaret Thatcher to deal with him. She was a wonderful woman!

So many comedians on this site!

Back to the thread though: Margaret Thatcher thought she was the queen - so maybe the Taiwanese just got mixed up a bit and as for Thailand - well they saw the movie didn't they? and it must have all been true - so of course Meryl Streep was really Margret Thathcher

+1...Especially the whitening products.

I remember the days of Mrs Thatcher, the UK needed more of Scargil types, to resist her dictatorial attitude, Poll tax--N Ireland--Miners--Falklands--privateisation--trippled unemployment---

All leaders do some good whoever they are, When they get drunk with power they all have to go, here is an example.
