PHUKET: A French tourist afraid his wife would be angry for him spending too much money while on holiday in Phuket was arrested yesterday for filing a false report to police claiming he was robbed by two teenagers.

The Frenchman, named by police as Marc Forestier, 54, arrived at Karon Police Station at about 2:30pm to file the report, said Karon Police Deputy Superintendent Sophon Borrirak.

“He claimed the teenagers took 2,000 baht cash and some important official documents. He said he was robbed in front of the Siam Commercial Bank near Karon Circle,” Lt Col Sophon said.

Officers dispatched to the scene questioned shop owners, tuk-tuk drivers and other people in the area – all of whom, however, said they knew nothing of the robbery.

“The officers then reviewed CCTV camera footage from the bank and other businesses in the area, but found no evidence to support the claim that robbery actually took place,” Lt Col Sophon said.

“So we came back to the station and started questioning him. He finally confessed that he had spent a lot of money and he was afraid his wife would be angry with him, so he report to police that he had been robbed,” he added.

Filing false reports to police are treated seriously in Thailand.

Danish tourist Morten Berthelsen, 18, was handed down a 500-baht fine and a two-year suspended jail sentence – but was luckily not deported – for filing a false report that he had been beaten and robbed .

Australian Stevie Bamford, however, served two weeks’ incarceration at Phuket’s Bang Jo Detention Center in Thalang for allegedly filing a false reported she had been raped by a Patong tuk-tuk driver .

Ms Bamford formally retracted her claim, but on returning to Australia re-affirmed on national television that she had been raped and criticized officials for their handling of the report .

In Asia men sometimes bring their salaries to home and wife will give some spending money back to the men. But in France? That's only 50 euros, which should not be an calculated cost, specially during holidays.

I wonder what he could have spent 2,000 baht on that would have made his wife angry?

Seems the going rate.

The price it seems has doubled since ordered take away last. Unless that includes drinks and delivery charge. whistling.gif

I suppose that's not take away, but more like car wax.

I have never been a great fan of social networks, eg facebook etc, but I really enjoy Thaivisa. It is 110% for sure the one place I can read something that sends me to sleep with a smile on my face, sometimes I actually do laugh out loud at some of the reports about guys like this idiot. Then the serious side kicks in and I have to wonder, if someone is so stupid then how the hell did they manage to get enough coin together to get here.

Can it be any surprise that many of the Thai police force have no real respect for many of the ex-pats here ? I mean that 99% of the time guys like this tw-t are who they have to deal with.

Going to sleep now before I lose the giggles.smile.png

I think he spent the money on peroxide. It must have taken 20 liters to bleach that hair. Maybe he ran out of money before he could buy a comb.

At first glance I thought they'd mistakenly included a photo of an elderly woman.

When did 2,000bht become 'a lot of money'

Another 'not to be mentioned'' site says 20,000 baht...makes a little more sense, but maybe even 200,000 would not have been worth the effort??Made himself look a right tosser, and still has to explain to his wife anyway...giggle.gif

I don't think we need three guesses.
Get your drift. Reminds me of a friend I had during my long gone bar owner days, who often borrowed 500 or 1000 Baht off me late at night. When he came home, his wife always checked how much money he still had, and if the balance was too low she suspected he had been with a lady.

She only cared about the money, not him. :) :)

Just the sort of comment which gives foreigners a bad name. Maybe you have vast, Taksin-like quantities of money but to many Thai people, 2000 baht is a lot. Whether or not that is the real sum of money, you need to open your eyes and appreciate where you live.

Questions that need to be answered are:

  • does he have a French or a Thai wife?
  • 2000 THB for a tourist is next to nothing; 20,000 or 200,000 does make more sense... so how much was it?
  • why
would he not buy something for his wife and explain to her it was very
expensive? (it would definitely give him some brownie points...)

It would be VERY interesting to know what he will tell his wife NOW cheesy.gif

How stupid can he get?!? tongue.png
