Wow, that takes stupid to a new level. Maybe this guy will be promoted by Chalerm and given a job as a firearms instructor.

From the Nationchannel news article linked to the story, it's revealed he told her he was a high ranking police officer and gave her his name and rank, by way of proof. In a sense I guess, he believed himself above the law and thought, as a Lao national in a lowly restaurant job in Thailand, she would be too intimidated and threatened to complain.

It was also reported after the rape the next morning he made a point of dropping her off at her place of work, so she knew he knew where she worked, and threatened to have her killed if she told anyone what happened.

Apparently he phoned up Samut Prakan police on the 24th and told them he would give himself up at 2pm the next day.

Having the majority of your citizens stare at the displays of their iphones and ipads while they walk, drive or ride through the streets of your capital doesn't make your country a "first world" state. Nor do it record sales of automobiles - which are then crashed in record numbers of accidents - nor American junk food restaurants at every corner and an increasing number of obese youngsters.

1. open display of disregard for even the most simple laws and regulations

6. losing 30 to 50% of every taxpayer's baht spent on government projects to corrupt officials and politicians

This guy is 53 and obviously didn't just get out of the police university to get his sub lieutenant rank. Normally that's a promotion from something like senior sergeant major. He must have many years of service moving through the ranks to become a sub lieutenant.

That is correct. Chalerm instituted a policy of mass promotions of police sergeant majors to sub-lieutenant with minimal requirements, saying it was too demoralising for thick and lazy policemen to remain as NCOs all their lives. This must be one of those.

As a long serving officer in wealthy Thonglor he should have access to enough bribery proceeds to not have to moonlight as a cab driver. I would be willing to bet he has been using a taxi mainly to find vulnerable rape victims like illegal aliens for many years and is used to getting away with intimidating them by showing his police credentials. This time the victim's employer must have got so angry when she heard the reason the girl didn't show up for work that she dragged her along to the cop shop. Other marginalised victims may have been murdered and no one reported them missing.

When they fix the sewers, drains, landfills, pollution, corrupt politicians, wholly corrupt and inept Police force, the staggering amount of fatalities on the roads, the social security system, the woeful public transport infrastructure, the military interference in politics, extrajudicial killings of criminals, human rights abuses, the massive human trafficking problem, the widening gap between rich and poor, the dreadful education system among other things then I might agree with you.

In a country with Thailand's legal system, I can think of 1000 good reasons for an innocent guy to scoot (if in fact he did and he's not buried in somebody's back yard).

From the Red Bull heir's story, it's pretty obvious that some folks have stroke that trumps the po-po.

• It could have been a carnal transaction gone bad when he refused to pay after a night of her company.
• It could have been the girl's boss that wants to settle some kind of score with the guy.
• It could be a reverse shakedown to get some money out of him, or get him to leave someone's enterprise alone
• They could be setting up the "emotional distress" defense for when someone does find his body.
• It could be any number of parties that want the guy to squirm or disappear.

I think it's pretty reasonable to wait to hear the guy's side and see some evidence before reaching for the rope on the basis of a complaint...and the fact that he isn't around.

He may be guilty as sin and deserving of a .38 caliber vasectomy, but there's time for that after the evidence is in.

And I can guaranty you this- if some powerful Thai accuses me of something that would send me to prison for years, I'm scooting whether I did it or not.

Actually "third world" was originally a term used to describe those countries that while under developed posses a third of the worlds mineral and natural resources. Meaning has since changed though I will concede.
