Diakin are very quiet BUT see my post on R22 refrigerant. Mitsubishi Mr slim are quiet and environmentally friendlier. Also buy an inverter model and be aware the bigger the unit the noisier it will be. You also need to weigh up the pro's and cons of a permenant low noises against a unit switching the fan on and off through the night.

With an inverter model the oversize is not the biggest problem as the unit will slow down to a low speed after how much cooling is needed. But how low cooling effect it can give and noise at low speed. At full speed more or less all units will make noise.

We have a Panasonic Inverter 13,000 for our 17 sq.m.bedroom. The compressor is just outside the bedroom door on the balcony of our town house. Within approx. 15 mins, the compressor fan slows down and in the early hours of the morning, as the ambient temperature falls, it will switch off periodically. What is particularly good is that when the compressor switches on, it does so smoothly, no sudden click and up to speed. The internal unit is almost silent.

There are many on-line aircon sizing calculators.

I know the forum search function can be "challenging," but hopefully you can find threads discussing precisely your questions. I know that over the years I've learned a lot about air con in various ThaiVisa threads.

For the size of unit required, there is no fast and easy "one size fits all" formula -- there are too many variables. Such things as: Is the room on an upper floor, and if so, is the ceiling insulated and/or is the roof space well ventilated? Does the room have exterior wall(s) with direct sun exposure? Any large windows and/or do the windows have air leaks -- a typical Thai wooden swing out window usually has an air gap by the hinge. Do you occupy the bedroom during the heat of the day, or only at night for sleeping?

My upstairs 16 sq meter bedroom has a 12,000 BTU air con unit. The exterior wall never gets direct sunlight, but I do have the "leaky" swing out windows and an uninsulated ceiling. At night, the unit is adequate to keep the room at a constant 23°C. During the day, however, with the heat radiating down through the ceiling, the unit runs non-stop and struggles to reach 25°C during the hot season (like right now.) Mid-afternoon on a sunny April/May day, it's not uncommon to have a reading of 34°C in that room (with air con off) -- so it's no wonder the air con struggles!

Google for air con sizing calculators, but do NOT just buy what yr installer/seller recommends. It WILL be too large for your space, will cost more up front as well as to operate since largest current draw is upon startup of the compressor and oversize units "short cycle" on and off continuously. This also burns out a/c units more quickly.

As in all things, caveat emptor and googlis urfriendis.
