Just recently i have started to get sore kidneys in the evening. I go about my business during the day and then for a couple hours before sleeping i have pain.

Some info, maybe not relevant, don't know? I don't smoke / drink only very occasionally / exercise regularly / diet is ok ish i am middle aged.

Any idea's?

Thanks.

Renal stones would cause severe colicky pain and not just before sleeping. Does not seem to be what he describes.

And nephritis does not usually cause localized pain, and would have other symptoms such as edema.

OP: How do you know the pain/soreness you feel is renal in origin? Please describe exactly what you feel and where, and also indicate whether you have any fever, edema (swelling) and change in urination.

It is possible this is a muscular or spinal problem unrelated to the kidneys.

Thanks for the reply.

What's is renal?

I have no fever, no swelling and nothing abnormal about urination.

The pain is just at the bottom of the rib cage, both sides about the same amount of pain. It is not excrutiating pain but just recently started. I have put on a little weight recently, perhaps 6-7kg, anything to do with this? I am 1.8M and 88kg.

Thanks.

Renal means related to the kidneys.

Pain is exactly on your sides (i.e. not on abdomen and not in the back)?

Sounds more like some type of muscle strain.

Pain is not EXACTLY on the sides, more to the back, could be muscle pain - i'll give it a couple days and see what happens.

Thanks.

If you do not have any contraindications to them, NSAIDs (ibuprofen and the like) may help. Be sure to take on a full stomach as these meds are very irritating to the stomach.
