What's Wrong With My Chuck.

Featured Replies

I always have the simplest of questions on this forum.

But I really have no one else to ask where I live.

My Blacker Drill chuck is acting up.

When I put any amount of pressure on it the drill bit stops turning but the chuck doesn't.

No matter how much I tighten the key.

Have I worn out my first drill chuck. If so where would I get a new one.

I bought it in Tescos so I don't think they will be too helpful.

Also how do I change it.

Thanks

Before you write off the chuck spray a bit of WD40 in there and wind in and out fully a few times, mine has got a bit stiff on occasion and failed to grip properly.

Anyway to remove the chuck:-

  1. Open fully and look down the end, if you see a screw / allen screw remove it (left-hand thread).
  2. Place the chuck-key in the normal position.
  3. Place the drill on the bench and hit the the chuck-key with a mallet so that you turn the chuck anti (counter) clockwise.
  4. Do it again until the chuck comes loose.
  5. Unscrew the chuck.

Replacements available from any good tools shop, even HomePro.

There are several videos on YouTube to ensure you're hitting it the right way.

Right,

It had gotten stiff about a month ago so I put some machine oil on it,trying to keep it from getting tin the inside and worsen the slipping problem.

Is WD40 better and do I need the take the chuck off to spray it.

WD40 will penetrate the inner workings better than a normal machine oil, I'd just give it a good squirt inside and see if it improves, no need to take it off.

A couple of sites suggest roughing up the bearing surfaces of the jaws, not sure if that will help.

Above is very important - at least use two of the holes to make tight.

O.K,

Thanks guys,

Next mission is to drive to town and get some WD40.

Going to the hardware shop is often the hardest part of doing any job in Thailand.
