PHUKET: -- DSI officials today (August 14) declined to comment on the whereabouts of one of the groups named by DSI boss Tarit Pengdith as “influential” – which no longer seems to exist.

Mr Tarit named 11 individual and groups in Phuket as “influential” at the unofficial opening of the Transnational Crime Coordination Center last Friday (August 9).

One of these was the taxi group based at the Dalar Resort in Cherng Talay. However, when The Phuket News tried to contact the resort, the phone number was “temporarily out of order”.

The Phuket News called other hotels in the area and was told that the resort had been closed for more than a month for renovations, and the taxis were no longer there.

Asked about this, a DSI official said the DSI has evidence and witnesses against the influential people and groups, but cannot disclose any of this at present.

“We need another month before we can be completely confident of our facts, and then we will make a statement,” he said.

I would have thought it more prudent to get the facts straight first, then simply arrest the people involved rather than giving them a heads-up first. But of course, it wouldn't do to arrest anyone truly influential, would it?

Why before naming the group in question that Mr Tarit named on the 9th of August did he or the DSI, not do any homework and discover what the Phuket news did and discovered it seems with ease, it seems that the resort had been closed for over a month and taxis were no longer there..The mind boggles at some of the incompetency of Thai officials, Amazing Thailand....rolleyes.gif

....sound familiar???....

........give 'proper consideration' to the proper individuals...

..get plenty of time for evidence to disappear...safely place cash and other assets elsewhere......

.....set in place alibis, excuses and 'explanations'.........and maybe a 'fall guy' or two.....

...presto.....'justice magic' of Thailand......

Red herring to make the DSI look incompetent, or really incompetence by the DSI? I'm guessing the former, but time will tell.

I would really like to think so.[red herring theory] but this statement from the DSI really is leaning towards incompetence IMO;

I'm leaning toward the DSI is just making a media show as is everyone else, unfortunately... If they and the other local officials can actually do something about the taxi ranks and other issues they say they are going to address and there is actual change, then I will believe it's more than just lip service. What happened with the National Park encroachments and ever other campaigns to clean up the corruption here? Transferred to a non active post? Although I wish them luck!

As far as the transport issues are concerned, the one problem that affects most everyone on the island in some way, is the extortionately high cost of a fare.
Whatever ultimate solutions these investigations might bring (don't hold your breath), I highly doubt lower fares will be one of them. If anything, I'd bet that fares will rise.

I did notice yesterday at the local Tesco the usual contingent of illegal taxis taking up all the closest parking and lurking around the entrance were missing.

Work has stopped on three sites encroaching on Sirinart Nat'l PArk , and it was said the investigation would not be quick, so ..

Someone living in Phuket will probably able to confirm this, but I feel another sensationalist story.

I have no doubts that the hotel in the OP was closed quite some time before the DSI made it's statement on 9 August.

It's seems as though some of the pressure being applied by the DSI is paying off. According to an article today in the Phuket Wan, a man who is accused in a letter of being the "big bag man" for the government agencies whose numbers seem to coincide with what Preechavude 'Prab' Keesin, son of Patong Mayor Pian Keesin said in this article: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/661571-mafia-rule-patong-kingpin-points-finger-at-officials/

It's getting a bit more interesting.

It will be interesting Jimi, but, hypothetically, if you arrested all 11 "influentials" tomorrow, and gave them 10 years gaol - how will that fix many of Phuket's problems?

Perhaps Phuket has past the point of no return.

We'll see. Seems like some hit-the-fan.gif.pagespeed.ce.6UelFDbFNJ. ! More than any I can remember in the past 8 years I've been around. But of course the head of the national parks, named the "demolisher" was suddenly transferred to a non active position, does give me some doubts...

Well, I hope for positive change here, but I've been waiting quite a while now for the very obvious "fixes" and only for what other destinations in Thailand have, nothing more, nothing less, particularly in relation to effective and afforadble public transport.

Seriously, I think it's that entrenched here now that The Thai Army would have to be based here to guarantee safety and security for major changes to be be allowed to be implemented, and I can't see that happening.

Phuket has been run by criminals, for criminals, for just too long.

The Families would still be about a lot of cell phone calls from the monkey house.
