legman Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 I just bought a car that I would like to yank the motor out and put a faster one in. On my truck I noticed they copy the serial number from the block on the registration form during inspection. Why is this done? To check a database of stolen engines or to prevent a owner from swapping a motor?
Heng Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 You can change the motor. Lots of folks (especially 'kids') do it. I think an additional piece of paper has to be in your car registration to note the upgrade though.

Then take this, the registration book and the vehicle with the new engine fitted to the land and transport office and they will amend the book. I have a BMW 325i with a Toyota 1JZ-GTE (280 BHP), and an old S Class Mercedes with 2JZ (Lexus GS300). The Mercedes is almost finished. You can see more here :- http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/show...d.php?p=1127049 Getting the paperwork in order is the easy part, finding a competent shop to do the work is the real challenge. Out of interest, what is the car you've bought, and what engine are you looking putting in ? Regards. .
legman Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 Thanks for the responses so far, appreciate it. Out of interest, what is the car you've bought, and what engine are you looking putting in ? '95 Honda Civic Want to have the Honda dealer put in a DOHC - VTEC. Not excited about the 4 week estimate for labor.
INTJ Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Hi, Having the work done by the Honda dealer would not the the best way to get things done IMO. I take it you are looking at the B16A engine ? They run at around 40K for the motor, and I would think around 10K for labour. The whole job, engine parts and labour should be well under 60K and shouldn't take more than a week to finish. The Civic B16A is a really simple conversion. For some ideas of engine prices, have a look at :- http://9yakyai.com/news.html Regards.

The dealer is out, I never really felt comfortable with them. I may need a friend to translate that web page to english for me, although here is some domain information I found so far. whois -h whois.opensrs.net 9yakyai.com ... Maybe 170 at 7800rpm, I think the VTEC redlines alot higher though. http://9yakyai.com/b16a-now.html It will also require some new wiring, fuel pump upgrade etc., but these guys should be able to handle the whole swap, hopefully.
INTJ Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Hi, I was not recommending 9yakyai as the place to do your conversion, merely provided the link to give you an indication of prices. They are extremely unreliable when it comes to answering the phone, which is never a good sign. Also their engines edge towards the expensive (IMO). Start with a few modified car magazines from the local newsagent (XO Autosport and similar). Cheers .
