PHUKET: -- Phuket marine-business operators yesterday were provided with a seminar to improve safety standards in preparation for high season.

“We are endeavoring to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities this coming high season, and we also want to ensure tourist feel safer this year,” said Chatchai Sakdee of the Phuket Marine Office.

Marine officers provided lessons concerning regulations; Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) staff spoke about tourism plans that businesses can use in their marketing strategies; and the Marine Police detailed the finer points of Marine Law, explained Lt Col Chatchai.

“This was a good seminar, because there were many officers who provided us with useful information,” said Woranart Wongvanich, Marina Manager of Royal Phuket Marina.

I wonder what the "finer points of Marine Law" are, and more specifically, how the hell is knowing the finer points of those laws going to make the operators any safer?

What kind of information ? I just hope for the sake of the tourist season that security will be the main issue.

Complain if the authorities don't provide training and complain when they do. Consider volunteering your maritime safety expertise and get involved with training and education instead of voicing annoyance on TVF. It would mean so much more and actually may make a difference.

You need a work permit to do volunteer work. :) :)
