I think that this is valuable info. because if your Thai friends are all female you will end up mimicking them inappropriately.

Female teachers at primary schools greet the girls with ค่ะ and the boys with ครับ for this reason I think.

For the OP's น่าเกลียด my dictionary has 'ugly'. I believe the literal meaning is something like 'should hate'.

Sounds to me like the lady was joking she was too ugly.
