PHUKET: -- South African Ambassador Ruby Marks met with Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut on Friday to discuss the possibility of opening a consulate on the island.

“South Africa has a consulate in Chiang Mai, and now they are considering adding one in Southern Thailand,” Gov Maitri said.

“Phuket is a logical choice because we have so many South African visitors – 77,915 last year,” he said.

Amb Marks also plans to bring steel industry investors to Phuket, Gov Maitri said.

“More foreign business means more job opportunities and more income for Phuket,” the governor said.

'Amb Marks also plans to bring steel industry investors to Phuket, Gov Maitri said.'

This puzzles me. I was not aware that Phuket had a steel industry or even plans to start steel manufacture.

First the Russians now the Saffers! What is Phuket coming to? biggrin.pngbiggrin.pngbiggrin.png

South Africa is the world leader in the steal industry

Last time I applied for a South African passport thru BKK Embassy, they sent my passport to Sweden !! I wonder if the "good" ambassador even knows where Phuket is !!??? (SA has gone to the dogs!)

Only +- 14 000 South Africans visit Thailand each year so why have 3 offices in Thailand. A waste of tax payers money.

@ HuaHin62, there is a South African embassy in Bangkok, where is the other embassy / consulate? Your comment said 3 offices in Thailand.

To all the non-South Africans; just to point out that HatYai2 most likely did not make a spelling mistake with "steal".

Quite frankly, if they are going to "waste taxpayer's money" I would not mind it being wasted on me for a change. Normally I don't see too much of my tax money benefiting me.

So bring it on.

Just scared showerhead visit the Phuket consulate and then think it's Nkandla by the sea, the poor Russian and Thai mafiosi will not survive with him around.

@ HUAHIN62 and to Thaddeus, Thank you for enlightening me with your answers. So Phuket is a possibility then? I have also noticed there are quite a few SA's living on Phuket now.
