What advantages for thicker glass?

Recommended Posts

I've received quote for glass windows and doors for my house. It was standard thickness glass of 5-6.

I can get it in thicknesses of 8 or 10 for an additional fee but I'm not really sure what the advantages are for having thicker glass.

I don't think it insulates better. I'm not sure if it would help with noise reduction.

Any real benefits of thicker glass?

The thicker the glass will be marginally better insulator and sound barrier. For sure more resistive to things that might try to break it. Good drapes are much better investment than the glass though.

well from 5 to 10 mm the resistance for heat transfer must double.

Rather than thicker, double pane with an air space between is better for both sound and insulation, but expensive.

Glass is a very poor thermal insulator, so thermal comfort is irrelevant to glass thickness for this discussion.

Sound rejection is a more relevant factor, but without good weatherstripping and perimeter seal, sound filters through the gaps and negates thicker glass' benefits. Sound rejection requires thicker glass plus air-tight assembly, plus a home-wide, holistic approach to sound rejection that is well beyond the bounds of this thread.

Glass thickness is based on safety: window size and wind speed.

1. what is your largest window size?

2. where is your project located?

For best thermal preformance you need to install

LOW E thermo Paine insalated glass panels

Google. ANDERSON windows they manufacture the best windows

It will show you all the specs. Hope this helps ya. Cheers

The posters to your post are all correct.

i will be constructing a house next year. Upon my research I will build my house using double brick walls with a 100 mm cavity and double glazed glass 6mm external and 5 mm internal.(this will block high frequency sound and only reduce low frequency sound),this also has thermal reduction. From my research it is only possible to eliminate low sound frequency at great expense. The differential between 5-10 mm glass will only be minor in sound and thermal reduction. As bbradsby pointed out installation is critical.ie roof insulation.

For my windows i will be using a Bangkok supplier with German accredidation but at a cost I hope i can recoup through lower electricity costs.

Whatever you do with the windows will have much less affect than what you do with the drapes. Good heavy quality drapes will take care of the shortcomings of just about any window.

True. But then you'd need to have the curtains closed all day. In which case just replacing all windows with wall is by far the cheapest solution...

What kind of place sells good quality drapes at a good price? What would drapes for a two piece sliding door cost?

Index sells drapery but we've always gone to local place where you pick out the material and they make to size. I don't remember how much but the good ones are not cheap and what is used for rods, hooks, and opening system can add up also.

BTW: we only close the drapes when direct sunlight on the window and at night.

I admit I know very little about drapes.

Do you buy drapes that have an inside liner that.... Insulates.....blacks out light?

If it is a liner is it just sewn into whatever fabric you purchase?

Are there whole sale locations where you can buy fabric and lining material? Then you can bring it to a local seamstress to make up your drapes?

For those of us that live on the border with Laos and Cambodia are there locations there to buy fabric and lining?

I'm not drape expert - but guessing Si Sa Ket and Ubon would have some place. Maybe check at some of the upscale hotels and ask where they get theirs. Our drapes are not lined but they consist of a 'heavy' fabric.
