The survey does not say what is drunk, only the volume of alcohol. A small bottle of white whiskey, popular with the Isaan farmers, is cheaper than a bottle of beer. Isaan has over 30% of the population of the country and not all of them are farmers.

What you're referring to is so called "Lao Khao". I'm in my gf's village at the moment (not Isaan though) and the locals here, only the men, enjoys this beverage after a long hard days work, it's moonshine and has 80% vol.!! bah.gif Like gasoline...Delivered in platsic bags, so you better have a "refill bottle" at home. I had it last night, but I'm mixing it with Ice and red Fanta, "Nam Deng", then it's actually drinkable. The locals drinks it in shot glasses, no mixer, not even water on the side...
