While we are on the subject, is it possible to safely leave your car on the thai side of the chong sa ngam border crossing for a few days.

No idea about Chong Sa Ngam crossing but Chong Chom crossing yes.

In case if anyone's interested, I took Chong Chom path without any facilitators, and it was a walk in the park - no delays, and no questions asked (except for one from Thai military guy, who wanted to know, if I came with my wife).

I was overcharged for visa on arrival though (1200 baht).

You got lucky they didn't notice your passport validity. Now it is time for a new passport.

If you are married to a Thai you can get a 60 day extension at immigration to visit her.
