Pongthep: Elections can be held again and again, if disrupted

BANGKOK, Jan 31 – Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana has asserted that elections in troubled or disrupted constituencies can be organised again after Sunday and the law does not restrict the polls to be held on a single day.

Thailand has set Sunday for the snap polls despite widespread protests by the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) which has repeatedly called for a national reform before holding general elections.

Mr Pongthep said it would not be necessary to issue a new royal decree for elections in certain areas after Sunday, adding that the general elections will not be nullified if related agencies strictly abide by the law.

He said the caretaker government will be able to explain its justifications for invoking the Emergency Decree to the Civil Court.

The court has summoned the government to a hearing next Thursday to defend itself against a petition opposing its enforcement of the state of emergency in Bangkok and parts of surrounding provinces since Jan 22.

Mr Pongthep said the prime minister could assign a lawyer to represent her in court.

On her Facebook page yesterday, caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra invited the Thai people to go to the polls Sunday, saying Thai society fears that the upcoming general elections will lead to deeper political unrest and violence.

A large number of people believe that an election is the principle for preserving basic individual rights and the democratic system under the monarchy, she said.

She posted her portrait in a “wai” gesture to show her respect.

“This is one of the country’s most meaningful elections for it will be the guiding light to Thailand’s future under democratic rule. An election is a mechanism to end conflicts arising from difference of opinions in the most peaceful way. It reflects the desire of the majority of people and compels (the government) to listen to the minority,” she said.

She said this Sunday will give the opportunity for Thai citizens to equally exercise their voting rights to dictate Thailand’s future and the elections will be the resolution that moves the country forward despite obstacles. (MCOT online news)

Misleading headline again, and again!

He just said that constituencies that do not return a result can hold their election on another date, and that all constituencies do not have to hold such elections on the same date. It does not report that he said the elections can held again and again.

Yeah. And so the outcome of these elections will be as accurate as texting while bull riding.

When will this stupidity end? This whole environment has made a total mockery of democracy and civilized cultures.

Isn't there a Cliff Notes on how to run a government or write a constitution??

So there you have it folks,.. Mr. Pongthep ADMITS, that Thaksin and Pheu Thai can push the RESET BUTTON hold elections as many times as they please. and as they see fit, because THEY KNOW they will always win, no matter how many times they resolve parliament.

Good job, Pongthep, you will ALWAYS win,... AAAAAAALWAYSSS!!!!!! Because your master in Dubai thinks, you Pheu Thai goons take the laws into your own hands and suck the country dry at your most backstabbing killing intent.... I saw Suthep being interviewed by the Australian media. He states that he has no intention to disrupt elections or block entry to polling booths he says he wants the election to go ahead freely an he his pro democracy and against blocking people's rights to vote.

One of the issues with holding the election this Sunday is that are nor going to be enough people to manage it properly and I'm sure that those behind the scenes are working on ways of making it good for PTP......the elections have to get 95% of the house elected.

Who checks the electoral venues?

Are there security systems in place to ensure the voting IS legally conducted?

I think it's going to be a failure for Thailand and more than likely totally rigged throughout.

You should ask the Coup makers, supporters and financiers about this.

I think i can safely say that YL did not put any messages to the people nor did she pose for a photo doing wai!!! That is her Pr man in the PTP 's doing or her election campaign manager..

I wonder if Thai people know that people like YL have people training her what to say and how to act and always watching for ways to make her look better than she really is

They said that yesterday.

Then today he said they are blocking and his team are looking for ways to block without being videod. As are the loathsome dems looking for a way to vote where they are not snapped and posted about social media and branded the hypocrits they are.

Hard times for the old school coup mongers. Everything right out in the open now. Judicual coup.. Ok try it, it is so blatant that any puppet Gov or Junta would be laughed off the world stage.

Questions for day one of the coup:.

Who governs? whats to govern, who is to physically enforce it. Failed before it starts and it's by no means certain to suceed.

Gov. withstood this for 100 days not, so not exactly looking weak. The mob on the other hand is about 5% of what it staerted out as. Most have had cold feet and are seeing sense now they have read up on it more.

Meanwhile, non of the real issues get adressed by the Government. They think, they can just keep pushing their will on the people. In order to bleed the Country dry, Thaksin rather sees Thailand bankrupt or in civil war, than to find a solution that works for everyone.

Then again, he is Chinese, so what does he care about Thailand?

Rather than worrying about a one-sided, useless election right now, why not sit down and work out the problems?

Im sure, the courts will have a different view about the laws. We all know, that the Taksin-regime leaded by a wanted criminal and most members of the current Government faces banning from politics or involved in criminal activities like the rice-pledging scheme. We will see, if the Thais not able to stop this failed Government...thumbsup.gifwhistling.gif

No, you are wrong, read the Thai Constitution:

Section 236. The Election Commission shall have the following powers and duties:

(6) to order a new election or a new voting at a referendum to be held in any or all polling stations when there occurs convincing evidence that the election or the voting at a referendum in that or those polling stations has not proceeded in an honest and fair manner;

The Election Commission has the duty to organize replacement polls for any polling stations disrupted.
