220 AC to 12 DC Inverter

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I need an inverter to change the 220 V AC house current to 12 DC. I can find 12 V DC to AC inverters at Pantip but not the other way around. I would chop the end off of an old laptop power supply but I can't find fittings that suit my purposes. Anybody know where I might find one of these. I can order one of these shipped from China but that will take a month, I'm hoping to find one in the next day or so.

I have an adjustable one 1.5 - 12vdc in steps, but only 9w output. I think that I found it in Home Pro.

If you have an Amorn Electronics in your area, check there. They have a wide variety of power supplies and most include a universal connector set.

Amorn is your friend, there's one in Fortune outside PhaRam 9 MRT station.

Failing that the electronics district Ban Mo / Yaowarat, particularly the Old Siam Plaza http://www.soidb.com/bangkok/shopping-mall/map.html?nk=old-siam-plaza GPS 13.745779,100.500123 will certainly yield a result.

By the way, you don't want an 'inverter' (which goes from DC to AC) just a 12V DC power supply, check the current requirements of your load before buying.

Yes, I know it's not an inverter, just couldn't think of the correct term.

The device I am using requires a 12v 7a input.

I will check for an Amorn Electronics, thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the pointer to Amorn, I think the the variety depends on which outlet you go to. We called one and they only sell bicycles and the one we went to had a variety of inverters and (what I ultimately used) a selection of LED power supplies.

So I bought a 12v 10.5 a LED power supply - 450 baht

A salvaged power cord - 0 baht

A 3 outlet cigarette lighter expander - 99 baht

This is what I ended up with. post-145402-0-60755300-1391519414_thumb. It works perfectly.

Good result.

Do put some form of cover over those exposed mains connections or put the PSU in a plastic box with strain relief to stop the cable pulling out, we wouldn't want any little accidents.
