Bank union urges its board to apologize to customer



BANGKOK: -- The employee union of the Government Savings Bank today asked its board of directors to apologize to customers for the rice loan extension.

The union call was made as the board is to meet today to consider the resignation of its bank director Worawit Chailimpamontri who earlier declared to resign to show responsibility. His resignation will take effect 30 days from the day he announced.

Union president Likit Klinthanom said the board must show responsibility for the bank run of which a large number of customers rushed to bank to withdraw their money.

The incident was the worst of the bank’s 100 years of business after establishment.

He said he wanted the board to apologize to customers but would not pressure them to resign.

Besides he wanted the board to assure that it would never engage the bank in political affairs and quickly restore the bank’s image and customers’ confidence.

Meanwhile customers continue to withdraw money from all GSB branches but with a slower frequency than the past three days.

Several banks in the southern provinces have put up signs telling customers that the bank has already scrapped its rice loan extension.

In Ubon Ratchathani, some red-shirt people of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship were seen going into GSB branch depositing about 100,000 baht and also denouncing those bank employees who dressed in black as a sign to oppose the rice loan extension.

The gesture of an apology is a good one. It's so good in fact that perhaps the Yingluck administration can take a cue from it and issue a long overdue apology to the farmers and to the public for the complete mess that they have made.

this guy wants the bank board to never engage in political affairs, isn't that exactly what he is doing?

secondly is it not the responsibility of the union to take care of workers rights and conditions, and not to encourage bank staff to engage in political affairs in work hours. and encouraging bank staff to not wearing the rquirared uniform but to wear black,

and lastly is it up to the board to whom they will loan to, or is it now up to the staff at the counter???

Protest all you like up to you, but in your own time...

I would say, the manager should really resign....not that 30 day trick in the hope everything is forgotten in 30 days and he can continue.

Before the Board apologizes for anything, wait a few weeks and see if the net worth of the bank has increased or decreased. Many 'uninterested' people are depositing money into the bank to show confidence in the institution. See the article in the BP.

Regardless of who ,why , what , the circumstances places the bank in another light , was this out pouring of cash to the government for the rice farmers a commercial transaction or something outside of normal bank policy, to operate outside policy, the board should resign , as they have broken their charter, if it was within the guide lines , the fuss is political

You are 100% correct. First BAAC and now GSB unions dictating lending policy. That is guranteed to make a severe dent in investors' confidence.

My wife is a PTP supporter and she has a hell of a lot more than 100,000, not all PTP (red's) are poor just as not all foreigners are bigoted...
