Are floor drains like this available in Thailand? I found it on a Mexican discussion forum. Basically, in drains that don't (can't?) have a P-trap, this works via a spring-loaded trap door at the bottom. Weight of water is enough to open it up, but when the water is gone, it snaps closed. Someone said some drains like this have a lightly magnetized trap door to help ensure the seal.

Interesting device.

No I've not seen anything like that here, only the (tiny bit of) water retaining type which we have (in addition to pukka traps) which spend most of their life propped up because the shower doesn't drain fast enough if they're left in place :(

My only worry with the OP's device is that it has moving parts that could wear our, break or become clogged with soap residue or hair (my wife drops more than the Red Setter that we had in the UK).

OP, yr asking for nonstop maintenance. just go with the Thai "roach cap" or install a proper floor drain trap - they are available at large building material stores, or you can fashion one from 90 degree ell fittings.

They are available, as I have a few installed, but very hard to find, they exist in the plastic version, similar to the one in the OP, and metal version with a small counterweight attached to the trap. The latter are not advisable. I think I bought mine in global house 3 years ago, but recently they don't have stock. ( not a surprise at global house). The metal version they had at Homepro, but recently also not anymore.

I would like to find a few more, but haven't been able recently, as the ones that are preferred here are those that Crossy mention, and they really hinder the water draining.

I have 4 of this type installed in my bath floor drains. I can recall I saw and bought at the big Homemart on 36 in Rayong. I was surprised to see them. They have the metal counterweight and a spring. Cost was somewhere close to 500 baht but now 5 years ago. 2 of the 4 have issues now with the spring not closing the flap correctly. But these units are easy to clean. I have P-traps on the drains so not worried about the smell coming back. Seems like these units had a known name brand but cannot recall at this time.

With proper traps, you only need a typical floor drain assembly. more complexity here is a rusting hair catcher, wasted money, and will work against you quickly in the maintenance department.

The reason for this type is that traps have not normally been used in Thailand cement construction so if a drain trap is not installed odors will enter - in an open designed bath this may not be a major problem but when we start having closed windows or drains elsewhere it can become an issue.
