BANGKOK: -- Police say they have arrested two armed security guards of anti-government protests at checkpoints in Bangkok.

The first arrest took place last night on Petchaburi Road where police officers encountered the suspect as he was riding on a taxi, according to police reports. When the officers searched the man, they reportedly found a number of firearms, ammunition, and homemade explosives.

The man, whose name was not released by the police, reportedly said he works as a volunteer guard for the People's Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD).

The suspect also claimed he did not own the weapons, and he was merely delivering them to his friend at the PCAD rally site in Lumpini Park.

At 10.00 today, the police also announced the arrest of Mr. Panompai Chaengtawng, 43, who was found with a handguns and some ammunition at a police checkpoint in Wang Thong Lang district.

Among the items the police reportedly found upon the search on his vehicle are one 9 mm. handgun, 73 handgun rounds, one radio equipment, one pair of handcuffs, and one flashlight.

Mr. Panompai said he works as a temporary employee for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and also took up job as a volunteer guard for the PCAD security team.

Police charged both individuals with unauthorised posession of firearms.

It's amazing how they are able to regularly arrest armed PDRC members but not one single case of arresting those that have been attacking them almost daily.

Oh, yes, they caught a group of four armed with grenades some time ago, but they said they had nothing to do with the bombings, so never mind.

Maybe its because the PDRC guards think they are above the law and don't even need to bother hiding their weapons!, Whereas whoever is carrying out the attacks on the encampment is a little bit more savvy!

Violence begets violence begets violence. Thailand is on a slippery slope towards civil war. As things stand now, there is no rule of law -- for anyone.

1. Can we trust the Thai police announcements? Are they not known for finding wrong culprits or scapegouts?

2. Maybe a strategie of armed red shirts in disguise. When they are cought they pretend to be PCAD guards?

= peaceful strategie, reds show never violence, only their "enemy"

Around 20 protestors have been killed and nobody is caught even tough there are images available of the killers...

Only thing the police does is arrest PRDC memebrs who carry a gun and make a big media circus out of it although there is no proof they have even used them. Double standards? Of course not, Chalerm and Tharit would say.

Just as a reminder for those that came in late ,Thaskin was a police commander at one time, in 2006 (before Coup) the big laugh in the military was that he was equipping the police force with better weapons than the army, the idea was a type of para military, he's own army of thugs, there seems to be some miss guided loyalties amongst the police, me thinks.

Have you ever heard of self defence?

Do you really think, that they will allow themselves and fellow protesters to be killed, without trying to protect themselves?

Nobody is above the law, but everybody has the right to protect his life, as the police or the law are not interested to protect them.

So you are suggesting that these firearms are legally held by the guards? If they have a permit why have they been arrested? Nobody has THE RIGHT to defend themselves with illegal weapons.

The right of self-defense is the right for civilians acting on their own behalf to engage in a level of violence, called reasonable force or defensive force, for the sake of defending one's own life or the lives of others, including, in certain circumstances, the use of deadly force.

And yes, with legal or illegal weapons.

Well if your implication is that he is a fake guard, be prepared for some ridicule. Perhaps he's a UDD man in disguise, that red shirt guard they fished out of the water had a whistle didn't he?

"The suspect also claimed he did not own the weapons, and he was merely delivering them to his friend at the PCAD rally site in Lumpini Park".

Definitely red shirt tactics that.

He also admitted being an employee of the Foreign Ministry - interesting combination. Is he someone moonlighting, a protestor infiltrating the Foreign Ministry, or the Foreign Ministry infiltrating the protestors. Just lost!

Utter <deleted>, when you're using an illegal weapon you yourself are breaking the law, and if you take someone life you can rest assured you will be inside getting to know your cellmate quite intimately!!

Law abiding citizens DO NOT OWN ILLEGAL WEAPONS!!!!

What's the Army deployed for around Bangkok Steve?

A good lawyer would rip you to shreds if you used an illegal weapon to kill, maim or injure a 3rd party.

Do you remember the case of the Farmer in the UK, I think his name was Tony something, who was constantly getting robbed by these two Pikey kids.. and one night they broke in, and one of them never left.. He was exercising his right to self defence, how did that one work out for him at the time???

There's no point in using definitions according the the US Law, last time I looked, Thailand wasn't in Kansas anymore toto ;)
