The Cricket Sixes tournament is on again at Gymkhana. Very long standing tradition.

It's nice also because it seems to bring a more traditional kind of expat to Chiang Mai: the boozing, philandering kind.

It used to be that all expats were like that.. Ah the good old days. ;)

In all sincerity though: anyone planning on joining the Gymkhana event? That's another venerable Chiang Mai institution that really needs more support. I'd like to join for a bit, but unsure which day/time would be best? Anyone with experience of prior years who can make a recommendation?

Always a good few blurry afternoons listening to the thwack of leather on willow.

I'll miss the bacon sandwiches from The Olde Bell stall - hopefully the organisers have found an alternative.

Ahhh! Happy days for "the employees" of certain types of bars providing "certain types of services" as prices double "for one week only" as the testosterone infused weekend cricketers of the world hit the streets of Chiang Mai !!!

Spotlight has already bused in reinforcements, in case any one want a tickle down to fine leg.wink.png

Note to golfers, avoid until the cricket is over.

Spoke with a neighbour who golfed there today. It seems they play 3 x 6 instead of 2 x 9 so no problem

It's rubbish, playing back down the first 3 times and you will still get the member 6 balls! That said I stopped playing there 4 years ago so maybe improved?

The main problem playing this week is those rather hard large red balls regularly flying in the direction of the golf course from enthusiastic batsmen! If I go for a game this week will wear a crash helmet instead of a baseball cap!

FORE!!!!

Give the boys a break! Playing 6 three times is not so tough, and join in some of the fun!

What Is worrisome is watching the once mighty of limb (of which there are too many) limping to get to any ball, well-hit or not! Other hazards include Dave's cholesterol feast and stepping on broken beer bottles. But such is life at its limits! biggrin.png

As a non golfer or crickiter can you please explain 'they play 3 x 6 instead of 2 x 9 so no problem' the math (or is that 'match') is still 18!

Yes. A round of golf is through 18 holes. Some courses like Gymkhana are nine hole courses so you play to the same greens twice-but on some courses the second half is played from different tee off areas. But most are just two of the same. As the cricket atch is making 3 of the golf holes unusable, you get your 18 hole round by playing 6 holes 3 times. But as a non golfing non cricketer you probably find my explanation very boring. Sorry.

What an erudite answer! Thank you.

I just wish all TV posters would be as courteous and do the same!

I also wish I could get away playing 6 holes 3 times, never mind a hole in one, as I think you golfers put it.

PS How do the 'cricketers get 'bye' with it?

As your avatar suggests you are of Scottish descent and you have some of the worlds finest golf courses and some mighty fine players.Unfortuantly in the great game of cricket the cupboard is quite bare as is the production line of footballers. I doubt many of the cricketers would hardly be aware of the golf course next door, they are there for the booze up.

Thank you.

Please remember that according to (please insert Mark Twain etc) Golf is a good walk spoiled and also that the England cricket team has been led in the past by a brilliant (watch the backlash) SCOTTISH captain called Mike Denness.

We may continue the 'Scottish football greats' in another topic if you so wish!

PS let bat, ball(s) and willow continue to meet on all turfs!

With the ongoing success of the annual sixes it is quite possible that it could be you would be playing 9x2, two holes 9 times!
