Wet in Pai, dry in 15 minutes. :) the police are busy checking every farang in car or on bike, so they do not get wet, but I reckon they are hot in the sun...55555

I witnessed some interesting things today...

Almost more Farang than Thai (almost)

Two fights started (?) by Chinese who got wet

Thais gently pouring water on my shoulder

Thais dumping ice water down my back

Thais aim for center-mass body shots; Farang aim for head shots

A whole lot of very, very happy people getting very, very wet on a very, very hot day!

It was a fun afternoon!

Yeah, I saw it yesterday too. The first sighting was little hot bored kids in the moobaan..............normal and kinda cute the first day.

2nd sighting was when I was returning from the dentist at 3pm and had to pass the Thapae gate war zone and traffic was gridlocked with the early falang and Chinese tourists fighting on both sides of the street. At one point, a group of young Chinese ran across the road to soak a girl on a motorcycle wearing a leather jacket and they totally ignored her pleas to stop as she just seemed to be on her way home from work..............

This year, with the influx of Chinese tourists who are known to have bad manners anyway may prove to be a dangerous mix of idiots.............

I'll watch it on youtube, thanks.

Oh dear but never mind.

Several thousand folks, including a few idiots, will have a lot of fun.

Enjoy your seclusion.

I look forward to having a great party with the Chinese. Last year many of them seemed less prepared / didn't know about the festivities. This year should be awesome.

you're a sick puppy Winnie...........

These in the picture were Thai, but I also saw some exceptionally hot Chinese girls.. Fun to splash some water with them.

That is what I suspected actually. I find Thais much more attractive - at least of the Chinese that visit CM.

And the fights have begun too... Stupid farang ignored the Chinese tourist's waving arms and rain coat, ran in front of him and started shooting. The tourist got upset, got off his bike and started pushing the farang while people tried to get them to settle down. Finally the Chinese tourist got back on his bike and started to drive away while the farang continued to blast away at him with his water gun...

Yesterday we saw a farang in a guest house who had taped signs to his chest and back telling people not to throw water on him and was headed out the door to Thapae Road. I almost followed him to get a good laugh, but I did not want to get soaked myself

The Chinese do not have bad manners they know how to handle face of the Thais Farang think Face is something special.

Remember Chinese believe in face

Learn from the Chinese

Do not make fun of them

Yup, it seems that this holiday brings out the worse in all of us.

The Chinese are the two girls in the background with hats and sweaters on and not looking all that happy. Seemed obvious to me as that is standard wear from what I've seen of them around the university. smile.png Have seen some Chinese girls walking around the uni though that had me do double and triple takes. biggrin.png

Yup, it seems that this holiday brings out the worse in all of us.

It brings out the best in most, but the worst in a minority. Let's not forget what a great and important time this is for all Thais. Water-throwing is a small part of it. Go to the temples or the Buddhas parade that starts soon, to see the best. That's where I'll be.

After trying to get to the Old City by motorbike, facing long lines of traffic and many street closures and getting multiple buckets of water dumped on me while riding...well, as Gilda Radner used to say on Saturday Night Live: "Never mind".

Having been away from Chiang Mai for a few years and missing Songkran, it was fun to get back to it, but...

This year I noticed a LOT more ice being sold. It seemed as if every other vendor all round the moat was offering ice for sale. There were quite a few trucks driving and supplying ice to people. Five years ago there were just a few ice vendors.

Five years ago there were a LOT of vendors selling beer. This year I saw 'almost' none. People were drinking it, but there were no big displays of beer for sale.

Lots more big water guns and backpack-supplied shooters, not so many hand canons. That's a good thing. I think if they could get rid of the buckets the accident rate would plummet.

Lots more bands playing really bad music. Solid beat but little melody. Of course, when there are three bands all playing at the same time within arm's length of each other, and all playing with the volume control set at STUN, I guess it's hard to make good music...

This year I noticed quite a few groups of young teenaged Thai boys acting as vicious as the Farangs.

One group of 5 near Chiang Puak Gate was working as a team, coordinating their fast and hard bucket throws for 3 simultaneous hits followed by 2 simultaneous fast and hard blasts two-three seconds after, all directly in the faces... of Farangs only... The leader calling cadence. I watched this for about 10 minutes just to be sure I wasn't imagining things. I saw two people actually get knocked off their feet. This shouldn't be...

And I notice something else... A LOT of really friendly Thais having a wonderful day. It was nice seeing their smiles. And they were quite respectful too, when they wished me a Happy New Year, 'gently' pouring ICE water down my back, giggling! If I hadn't been gritting my teeth from the cold I would have been giggling too.

I guess Songkran is a lot like the story of the six blind Indian men and the elephant. Depending upon where you experience the holiday will certainly color your plans for next year!

As piewarmer said someone died on Moon Muang yesterday because they were blasted in the head with water. If they were shot with a gun in the head, that would be called murder. If it is Song Kran it is OK to kill someone with a blast of water and make them crash and die? Oh no that is fun as it is Song Kran! R.I.P. to that unfortunate person who may have being going to work to feed their family.

Is there a reference on the alleged death, or is this just a rumor?

Also, all Chinese I encountered today were very fun loving. A real asset to the party!!

Now that is the look of a man who really and truly in his heart loves Songkran! Good for you WTK. You'll never be old and boring. Enjoy!

I have only read what piewarmer said.He states he think the person concerned was dead.OK maybe not dead but hurt OK. Who has the right to do that to anyone because it is a "holiday" ?

I read that some of the Chinese ladies (tourists) walk around CMU in their pajamas. What's up with that?
