Can Anyone Recommend A Sat Nav?

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a Sat Nav that will be accurate out in the countryside on the smaller roads? I apologise if this has been done before. I have checked some of the previous threads and all of the posts were from 2005 - 2008. I am sure there will be new makes and models around now and probably more updated maps.

Garmin is the usual choice. My suggestiin is head to the thailand gps/maps page on here...might be in the travel forum.

Try one with satellite imagery, that way even if the roads aren't programmed in you can still see them.

One time we were driving back on the number 2 after a Songkran period and I saw a dirt road that ran for 15km alongside the main highway (which was not moving), it ended up in front of the problem (truck accident). Must've saved a good 2 hours.

This is the satnav I put in my 18 yr old A6

Why pay for an additional device, add it to your phone, like Sygic app, I have that on my tablet and it works extremely well.

I agree with you. Why pay for 2 gadgets when one will do the job, however I am a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to phones. I spend a good bit of my time overseas working in pretty remote areas where a smartphone won't work so I don't see the point of having a decent one. I have a Samsung Galaxy REX 70 which is at the very low end of the market. I can get my emails on it which is fine when I'm in Thailand but there is no GPS feature.

Phone GPS is dangerous if you use it without a passenger. Then the dam thing turns of as soon as you say Left or Right here. Garmins the best value here imo.

Nokia drive doesn't. Admittedly, the woman telling me where to go doesn't know thailand very well, but that's women for you...

I have to agree with the pop star.

My old Garmin 205W have been gold to me, the few times I been driving in Bangkok it was worth the 4000 baht I paid for it some 4-5 years ago.

You can use Garmin Base Camp on your pc and then via Google Earth plan your trip, transfer it into your Garmin unit and you are ready to go, very cool man.

We sometimes end up where we have no idea where we are when out driving and you just switch on the Garmin and press the "home" bottom and you are not lost anymore.

Only complaint are the long time it takes to pick up satellites when powering it up, could be the window film on the trucks windows but when when it locks on, it stays locked on.

If you check the i-net you can also upgrade the Thai maps for free, I got an English Thai map year 2013 in mine and it was free.

She is probably from Finland. Thai women will tell you where to go. thumbsup.gif

Just got back from a trip up country using a garmin 2467lm, 6490bht. Was well impressed with it, free map updates thai/english. Many "farm road tracks" showed up with notifications where the next minor road was if you were on one of these tracks. Also gave a good warning of any unexpected junctions coming up.

Did you buy the Garmin in BKK? If so can you suggest any good outlets where I can get one?

Cheers.

Here OP, you can have my satnav. Free of charge ;)

I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car

A satnav is a driver's friend, it tells you where you are.

I have a little satnav, I've had it all my life

Its better than the normal ones, my satnav is my wife.

It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive.

"It's thirty miles an hour", it says, "you're doing thirty five."

It tells me when to stop and start and when to use the brake

And tells me that it's never ever safe to overtake.

It tells me when a light is red and when it goes to green

It seems to know instinctively just when to intervene.

It lists the vehicles just in front and all those to the rear

And taking this into account, it specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver has so helpful a device,

For when we leave and lock the car it still gives its advice.

It fills me up with counselling, each journey's pretty fraught.

So why don't I exchange it and get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I'm properly fed,

It washes all my shirts and things and keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantages and my tendency to scoff,

I do wish that, once in a while, I could turn the bloody thing off!

55555 That sound familiar.

Slow down dear.

Yes dear.

Why you drive so fast?
