PTP is finished, and the current proxy caretaker PM has no influence at all.

Reforms first now, before the elections.

Wrong, PTP still has the government of Thailand. Facist movements will not be tolerated, is that not clear for you by now ?

Elections without reforms first are just a continuation of the current situation with the socalled democratic government ignoring and obstruction the opposition and even it's own voters.. It's that clear to you by now?

Unbelievable. Martial law has just been imposed without the governments prior knowledge and they want to carry on as if they still hold all the aces.

More unbelievable is that the EC publicly confirmed that, in it's view, Caretaker MP Niwattumrong has the authority to request this. If he has this authority, then he is obligated to present Surachai for Royal approval as Deputy Senate speaker, allowing the senate to open and vote whether YL and Niwattamrong, among others, should be banned from politics for 5 years!

I have a feeling that something may have been lost in translation and that Somchai didn't actually say he agreed with the govt's statement that Niwatthamrong has authority to countersign a royal decree without confirmation of that from the Constitutional Court.

Why was the February election annulled?

Because it couldn't be completed in 1 day. There were no other reasons given by the good old Constitutional Court.

Well, now that Captain Snappy has taken a firm grip on the country, voting can be assured to be completed in 1 day.

End of story. That is CC precedent from its February ruling.

No excuses now, Big Tu.

The whole point and stated many times by Suthep and PDRC is that reforms would be looked at and drawn up by a reform council / committee encompassing people from all walks of life.. and then decided on by the people then elections with a time period in the region of 18-24 months. In the meantime an interim government (without politicians) would administer the country!

Please get all people together to get reforms which help ordinary Thai to become real free, modify laws to make people not only in name but effectively equal. Educate people on what 'democracy' means. Make independent orginasations real independent. Enforce the changes which must be adhered to by ALL.

Now of course if someone what present a book with all reforms already worked out and clearly defined you'd complain no input would be possible anymore.

What country are you from? Of course the government is ignoring and obstructing the opposition. Do the Tories typically support the policies of Labour?

Can't see it not happening.

They have done the army up like a kipper today. the only body in Thailand with any electoral mandate whatsoever. even if it was blocked and then annulled by the coup plotters, that vote in feb still took place, and they won it!!!

Whilst they were patting themselves on the back and parading groups of minions before them. The Governement proposed a date. As the Army have guaranteed security in the country with this semi-coup of theirs. it will be hard for them to block it now.

After all, the ambassadors of the world are meeting in the FM and the Government had courted all the world leaders throughout the day.

Happy they may be in the Bangkok elite camp... but it ain't going to wash with anybody else and that's for sure

BTW as it's too early to say when the Martial Law can / will be lifted it would seem it is also too early to plan an election date.

At least I assume we will not have elections under the martial law. That's considered somewhat 'undemocratic', you know.

Great idea! Who are these non-politicians though? Suthep? How about judges or academics? None of them are political. Ya, that will be fair.

"the ambassadors of the world are meeting in the FM"

Are they? Didn't the former Minister of Foreign Affairs himself say "if the Army were to declare martial law nationwide, the new election could be held smoothly."

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/726599-former-thai-fm-surapong-voices-support-for-martial-law-declaration/

BTW the Feb2 elections were not won by anyone,, not with more than 25% of votes cast invalid or 'no vote', not with only 20 million out of an electorate of 47 million voting.

Statements from the caretaker PM, the army, the senate and different members of the election commission are all at odds with each other today. It does not seem as if anyone is truly in control, although you wouldn't bet against those with the biggest guns.

Oh that's OK then. You believe that's a good idea?

The election won't take place. The Bangkok elite didn't orchestrate a judicial and military coup to just hand back power via an election.

Hilarious to think that there's any chance of an election in the foreseeable future.

...well, obviously in the UK, the Tories oppose Labour policies, and vice versa, but certainly not with grenades and bullets...!! It's more like mafia families fighting for control here, which is why it all has to come to an end, and it will take time to build up a system that will work...!!

No. I contend there are no non partisan people in the world. Thats why we have democracy, to peacefully manage political disagreement. To believe there are, or should be, non partisan people is a bit naive.

Yes, that's OK then and of course when it's OK it must also be a good idea, somewhat implicitly, wouldn't you say?

Coup, coup?

Anyway with martial law declared as was even suggested by the Pheu Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs, it would seem a bit too early to talk about setting an election date within two months or so. At least I assume that no one here would want to have elections while the martial law is still active?

There are not enough Bangkok elites to drive this anymore, hence the army having to come in.

They organised an overthrow through PDRC in their own backyard of Bangkok.

It did not work, so the next step was all their allies and co-horts in the courts. Nope didn't work

They blocked and had their allies overturn elections that would have removed them (elites) once more.

The had the Army on the street to ensure the safety of the protest continuing, NOT the safety of the rank and file protestors.

When Sutheps 13th final call appeared to fall totally flat, and the opposition to the grew. They played their absolute final card the Coup.

Even this is unravelling before our eyes as they attact, Luddite style, social media and the press.

Total panic and with no planning, the Government have boxed them in on day one with an election date. Surely the EC have to conceed it is safe now that the army are in control, so any back tracking on elections is going to cause them to become further undone.

Or are the EC going to decide that Sutheps mob in the South are of concern to the Army and that they can't protect a few ballot boxes with one of the biggest budgets percentage wise of any armed forces in the world.

Unbelievable. Martial law has just been imposed without the governments prior knowledge and they want to carry on as if they still hold all the aces.

What does martial law actually change?

The buildings the army controlled, it still controls.

The army in Bangkok was in Bangkok before.

They failed to prevent a grenade attack on PDRC guards, so despite General Prayuths swagger, he doesn't have the current numbers to secure Bangkok, and martial law doesn't increase his military power.

So what actually does it change? Not a lot, it closes a few television stations, lets him arrest a few thousand people for a week without trial.

And then?

So why shouldn't the government press for elections, the Southern voters (of which I am one) want elections too. Suthep blocked *our* vote, not yours. It's not like he owns us down here.

The North wants the vote, the East wants the vote, Bangkok wants the vote, Central wants the vote, the South Suthep claims doens't want the vote, but then why did he block it from voting??

So elections are the solution, the only solution that lets Prayuth retire happy.

PTP may or may not have "the government" role - albeit in caretaker mode. But they simply are no longer in control. Their attempt at pretending to be a police state dictatorship with the increasingly ludicrous CAPO issuing daily threats warning people not to even discuss things has been finally removed.

There big worry now is someone independent, professional and honest may get a look at the real books - and really see what's been going on.

PTP are not interested in democracy, do not respect the law and admit to telling lies when they want to. Clear for you after 3 years?

You should realise that Thailand is no democracy, just asking for an election will solve no problems AT ALL.

You're talking in riddles, my dear fab4.

Could you please elaborate on what you think that me asking you what a coup with follow up in 2006/2007 has to do with a Martial Law declared as the Pheu Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs asked for a few days ago?
