How will the bars survive the curfew?

Recommended Posts

Many seem to discard it is not only bars, but also hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and shops.

Hotels are empty, but in comparison to bars, hotels have by far more bills to pay.

Restaurants have food rotting away and shops pay rents, wages, electric only no customers to buy

There are legitimate people in Bar & Restaurant business here in Thailand , and it really sickens me how many of posters on here could either care less or believe its a good thing . I guess those W**kers just stay home ,alone and are lonely and bitter people ! So if it all closes up ,then the other places of business get affected and the domino effect takes place! Because , whether you care or not ,think its a good thing or not ??? The Food & Beverage business here employs many people , and when those many folks have their tea cups empty , other businesses will soon be affected! Be careful ,what you don't care about as well as wish for to happen ! And of course those people will be the first to complain or don't live here anyways !

There's a lot of judgmental <deleted> in this thread. I hope the next crackdown is against whatever loser activity YOU do to enjoy yourselves. You know what, just go hurt yourself and leave us alone...

I totally agree that there are many legit bar owners that try very hard to make a decent living, and I respect that and doff my hat. However, there are also many bars that do make you wonder how they survive. Grimy little s*** holes where the staff are more interested in their mobile phones than in the customers, a smile is an unknown commodity, and service is unheard off. It is those places that nobody will miss.

How wrong you are, personally I couldnt give a flying duck about these overpriced farang gin palaces and their dont give a hoot attitude.

I live in Bkk and regularly go to, Petchaburi, Lat Prao, Pra Ram 9, Sri Nakarin, Pattanakarn etc etc.

Actually I aint lonely or bitter at all, I am actually thankful I took the time to learn how to speak and read Thai, I was in a bar complex earlier to day, small business owners, office girls, sales clerks, nurses and students made up the clientel, I never once head the phrase "cheap charlie" other such BG lingo as ting tong, hansum man was never heard.

We sat having a few drinks, never once pestered by hookers, hawkers or peddlars trying to flog 3 foot high Zippo lighters.

Gave the girl an 80 baht tip on leaving and was given a wai and a kop khun ka, in some sleazy Suk bar it would have been "kee niaw" muttered under the breath.

Please tell me why I should frequent your joint and not support a Thai place?

Lets have a look at the price for Thai food in a farang joint, please justify the rip off prices.

You remind me of the bitter farang owner off some farang joint in Issan who called me a snob because I chose to drink in the Thai place across the street at a third of the price you charged.

Somcahi quite happy to earn 15k baht per month, unlike some farang who think they have the right to earn 15k per week.

BTW, the Thai place keeps the beer in the freezer so its always cold, yours was roasting.

Good or bad, the tolerance of the path of others ends when it interferes with my path. I like the bars and the ladies. If you don't, too bad, that is your business, don't try to make it mine. Keep the 'christian sharia' out of Thailand.

Firstly they could offer drink specials like the The Thaskin One drink you become a megalomanic and go into hiding, or then Yingluck get drunk with power and deny anything. Or maybe the Charlem's favorite the Paratooper you jump from building's in search of Suthep. Then they could offer 2 for 1 on bargirls at short time price but keep all night. Or they could use this time to spruce up the dives maybe by cleaning up the bars is a good place to start. Then when curfew is lifted allow bars to be open 24 hours on 6 month trial to help recoup loss money. That alone would increase tourism Brit's and Aussie would be queing up at the bars. Also to solve this rice scam payoff and increase tourism they might want to think about allowing casino's to open in LOS the cash generated from that alone could pay off the farmers in 3 months plus could cover free healthcare and upgrade the school system in Thailand. Besides would piss off Thaskin cause he couldn't get a piece of it. So Win win all around and thats not mentionig jobs and tourist's it would bring in.

The bar trade is tough business to be in. The bar owners will struggle and the bar girls will struggle. The girls I feel sorry for are the bar girls that are good girls and only make money off the drinks customers buy them. These girls are going to really struggle. I hope the country gets there shit together real quick.

Yeah, get it together for the good girls.

Good girls?

Hmmm, do really good thai girls work in bars. Me thinks not. Oh that's right, that have no choice, my bad!!

I live in Jomtien. I rarely have a drink, only drugs I regularly use are caffine and nicotine, and don't use the women for hire. And if someone else wants to whore around, drink at 8 in the morning, etc etc that is their choice as long as it doesn't impact me (like running me over, for example). Don't like those people? Fine. Don't be around them. One of the most basic rights is the right to be left alone, especially from those who "know what's good for you" and try to impose that. I would guess that the money sent home by bar girls exceeds that from NGOs and governments, and with no middle men sucking up a good percentage of that cash (thinking of UN lifestyle here...).

Come back to Earth S Biker...... Bar industry dead? There are some really outrageously nutty comments on this venue, but yours tops em all. I really want to know what would make a person say such an obviously wrong thing.

It might hasten the demise of an industry that's already on it's last legs. Can't say I'll shed a tear.

You left off the "PDRC backers special" in your drink list. Send the servant out to bring home some single malt. Drink in your mansion. You call the shots. Do not drink in public. Out of sight, out of mind. Strings are being pulled. But if ignorant audience can't see the hands, hey guess the puppets are making their own choices.......

What a silly question. U think all of Thailand's economy is based on bars? If that we're the case, Phuket would have been extinct after the tsunami. The bars were closed for months. And as far as feeling sorry for the bar girls, I am sure they will even make more money by telling their numerous sponsors overseas they need more money. "Please teerak, can send more money this month?" And then they copy and paste it to the ten other guys they are already milking. This curfew seems like a great thing for the bar girls.

OG. iPhone 3

Tsunami....bars closed for months.....that must have been a different Phuket you lived in.....

$20,000 monthly rent in NAna Plaza for some bigger venues. How do they make it with no curfew? Im sure the Nana lanlords will suspend rent for the time being.

Thats right. . Not everyone is here for the culture. Me being one. Let's hope they get their shit together before the whole place falls apart.

Do you really think that the whole place will fall apart because a few places in this huge country will no longer cater for beer swilling men who sit in seedy knocking shops and seem obsessed with prostitutes? There is nothing pleasant about these bars, they exploit women .

If Thailand could rid itself of the image of GoGo bars, beer bars and the hideous punters that go with them, it would be a good thing.

Sorry. Rant over

Actually yeah it will fall apart, because many tourists come to the tourist spots to party and a nightlife. If the bars and nightly entertainment go down this is what it will mean:

Tourists will go to other places to party and have a good time, less tourists mean less money being passed through the hands of all businesses, hotels, restaurants, travel agents, tour groups, and retail will all suffer. If these businesses suffer, then they will start laying people off. This will mean thousands if not 100's of thousands of people without work. No work, no money which means no food or means to live. Unfortunately, it's the tourists that really drive a big part of the Thai economy and if they disappear, so will the money and the economy. So is this really a good thing? Big companies such as Toyota and Honda have already expressed concerns that if it goes this way, they will consider pulling out of Thailand and this is just the start.

You are wrong, I would suggest that the vast majority of tourists do not sit in glorified knocking shops.

There is no reason to have plenty of clubs / bars / restaurants etc where you can party and have a good time, and attract a more wealthy tourist.

I have no illusion about prostition in any major city across the world, but personally I find places where you pick a human being by a number to satisfy your selfish sexual urged demeaning.

If all these places were closed down, Thailand would be a better place.

You do realise that most prostitution in Thailand is for THAIS, don't you, not for westerners?

I also hope you are including the large number of Malaysian men that vist Hat Yai for a "good time".

Eliminate prostitution in Thailand and it will no longer be the place we love, whether or not YOU use P4P. Singapore tried your way, and guess what, IT FAILED.

Pattaya could be described that way 10 years ago, and it's still going strong.

No, I doubt he realises that. Some people spend their lives in an oxygen tent pontificating about all the people outside going about their lives, dimly seen or understood through the thick plastic... All he knows is he's right and everybody else is wrong. Sad. Thailand tolerates such people as it tolerates and even embraces so many things, but they will continue to do things their way, pretty much just ignoring and tacitly marginalizing the rigid & intolerant.
