PHUKET: -- Although the autopsy on Pornthip Buddeekam, 37, has yet to be completed, Vachira Phuket Hospital – where she died during childbirth on May 2 – has made a donation to her husband to help cover funeral expenses.

On Friday (May 23) Dr Jessada Jongpaiboonpattana, the hospital’s director, and his deputy Dr Somboon Wangtaetham handed a cashier’s cheque for B100,000 to Patong taxi driver Namporn Inthawong.

Mr Namporn lost not only his wife but also his newborn son Atsawin, who died two days after his mother.

Dr Jessada said “We are very sorry for what happened. A claim can be made if it is supported by the relevant documents. We are waiting for the autopsy result to tell us the actual cause of death. We have set up an investigation and we would like to stress that we will deliver justice to both [Mr Namporn and the hospital staff involved].”

Mr Namporn thanked the hospital for helping with the funeral expenses. Hospital employees had already attended the funeral and made their own personal donations.

Mr Namporn brought 50 relatives and friends to the hospital on May 10 to stage a protest against the deaths of his wife and son and to demand answers.

Dr Nara Kingkaew, the Deputy Director of the hospital’s Medical Department, later denied allegations of malpractice and callousness made in the more sensational Thai press.

Sorry for his loss , but would the hospital have given the cheque if he didnt stage a big protest ??.

No amount of money can cover his grief

And suddenly, all the grief has gone...............

Money, can cure everything in Thailand.

The temptation is to call you what you deserve to be called but I don't want the hassle of being banned. A very uncalled-for post. Just take a look at the man's face in the photo, that's not a happy man the grief is clearly still there. Money has cured nothing here it's just helped with the costs of the funerals for his wife and child.

I have been in Thailand for 7 years now and for the first 2 years I was living in the hospital accommodation, my wife being a nurse.

Take my word, I have seen many cases like this.

It's always a big fuss and when the money appear everything goes quite.

I sympathise with the man's loss, but I have seen many similar cases and I have witnessed the outcome.

Please don't jump the gun and criticise me, really feel sorry for the man.

I think your 1st reply was really inappropriate. According to the OP the man and his family protested demanding a thorough investigation of the death and answers of what had happened.

"Mr Namporn brought 50 relatives and friends to the hospital on May 10 to stage a protest against the deaths of his wife and son and to demand answers."

The hospital sympathized with the man and offered this money as HELP for costs associated with the death of his wife and baby and promised to give such answers after the autopsy.

"We are waiting for the autopsy result to tell us the actual cause of death. We have set up an investigation and we would like to stress that we will deliver justice to both [Mr Namporn and the hospital staff involved]."

While money certainly help with expenses directly caused by the death, it is not paid to ease the grief or pain. I am pretty sure that the man would be very happy to give back the money and get back his wife and son.

A German guy I know and his Mrs are friends of the family; When he told me about this two weeks back or so the story was heartbreaking, the poor lady knew there was a problem with her pregnancy and wanted an immediate section (this was not her first child) for what ever reason the Hospital apparently did not do this and wanted her to wait, the family's pleas for the section fell on deaf ears... things then took a turn for the worse.

Not only did this poor bloke loose his Mrs and new born Son, he also lost the mother of his older children. What should have been a time of joy became a nightmare. The family deserve everything that they get to assist in their loss, Good luck for the future of the family
