Study: Gay Dads’ Brain Activity Similar to New Mothers and Fathers

An Israeli study revealed that the brain activity of gay fathers when they are around their children resembles the development of both heterosexual mothers and fathers.

The current study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was conducted in Israel, and builds on work by neuropsychologist Ruth Feldman of Bar-Ilan University and others, who showed that the brains of new mothers become hyper-reactive to their child's cries and other emotional cues.

The 48 gay fathers raising children with their husbands seemed to be both mom and dad, brain-wise. Their emotional circuits were as active as those of mothers and the interpretive circuits showed the same extra activity as that of heterosexual fathers'.

One clue: in gay fathers, but not heterosexual ones, the brain also had extra communication lines between emotional and cognitive structures. The more time a man spent as primary caregiver, the greater the connectivity. It was as if playing both parental roles caused the brain to integrate the structures required for each.

Gentlemen, I apologize for intruding on this forum and I respect your desire to have a forum for issues of the LGBT community ...however, the headline grabbed my attention and I find it offensive. I would speak out about such a headline if it was reversed and stated that Gay Men were not good fathers or not as good of fathers or any other biased generalization.

I won't be checking back in for a response but would none of you take offense if this headline was, "Heterosexual Dads Make Better Fathers"? As a heterosexual, I would.

An opinion that most will not agree with on the better dad line of thought

As a gay man, this study seems a bit off. Not all gay men are going to be good parents just like all straight men are not going to be good parents. I for one, don't want to be a parent and as I am gay, I have lucked out because I'm not about to accidentally impregnate a woman! I am quite sure that both men and women, straight and gay have changes to the chemicals in their brains when they become attached to a child. This happens in a good portion of the animal kingdom and not unique to humans (gay, straight or other)

Great example fallacious science. Just because a guy "appears" wired to pitch and catch the ball it's a ridiculous assertion that the suggestion he can do both means he's best qualified in the game.

This is more militant science skewing conclusions based on shaky premises or faulty inferences. The subtle suggestion that the brain that fires together wires together is perhaps the most egregious piece of gay advocacy buried here: that the longer a social familial activity is done the better the "gay" will be at it. This brain entrainment suggestion is insidious. The hybrid world of relative social fabric, values, and moral equivalency that these social scientists are aiming toward is world divorced from any substantive or traditional meaning (Read: nihilist). Read through the study; modern science is ideologically coercive and this is just one more piece of social engineering.

I don't know how broad the study was, but it should be remembered that for many gay fathers it is a greater challenge to become a father than for straight men. This may account for a difference. It's not like a lot of gay men go around impregnating women by accident.
