NON-TRADITIONAL THREATS
Army chief's book sees rise in sales

THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- WE KNOW THAT National Council for Peace and Order boss General Prayuth Chan-ocha possesses song writing ability, but his book "Non-Traditional Threats" also demonstrates to a certain extent the Army chief's academic merit in national defence.

A sales person at Suksit Siam bookstore said the book, a compilation of papers written by Prayuth when he studied at the National Defence College in 2007-08, has enjoyed a sales spike after bloggers posted messages about the book on Facebook.

Prayuth was Army chief of staff when he attended the college to study the national defence curriculum.

The book's forward carries a message by Thanaporn Sriyakul, director of the Association of Political Science at Kasetsart University.

Thanaporn said he and Colonel Kachornsak Thaprayoon, the association's secretary-general, agreed that research work by Prayuth should be disseminated.

The research covers Prayuth's interviews with seven high-profile people including former Natural Resources and Environment permanent secretary Saksit Tridet, former Labour Ministry permanent secretary Jutathawat Intharasisuk and ex-Army chief Gen Anupong Paochinda.

He also interviewed Chulalongkorn University lecturer Dr Panitan Wattanayakorn, Pol Colonel Thawee Sodsong, National Security Council secretary-general Thawil Pliensri and former Police Chief General Adul Saengsingkaew.

Prayuth has stepped up the military's work to brace for non-traditional threats in the form of insurgency in the southern border provinces, international terrorism, drugs, illegal migrants, environmental disasters and outbreaks of disease, poverty and the imbalanced management of natural resources and the environment.

Thanaporn is a close aide of Somsak Thepsuthin, who co-founded the Matchima Thippathai Party.

Thanaporn established the Commoners Party in April with policies that matched the philosophical principles of the Nitirat group, such as amending Article 112 of the Criminal Code relating to the lese majeste, granting amnesty to those charged with political offences - except the leaders. After May 22, the NCPO summoned Thanaporn in a bid to have his political views adjusted.

The 208-page, Bt199 book is on sale for half price at the second Independent Book Shop fair on Fuang Nakhon Rd.

Officials thwart international car smuggling operation

CHIANG RAI, 23 June 2014, (NNT) - Authorities in Chiang Rai have thwarted a car smuggling operation, seizing a truck before being transported to a neighboring country.

Commander of the Mekong Navy patrol force, Captain Phanu Rattananantawatee, yesterday led a team of the Royal Thai Navy, Chiang San district police, and rangers patrolling in the area along the Mekong River bank in Bansantonpao Sub-district, after receiving an anonymous tip-off that a car smuggling ring was going down to the area.

Officials discovered 200-meter long tyre tracks that led to a local corn field and, eventually, to the Mekong River. Upon arriving at the smuggling scene, officials found a pickup truck with a Chaing Rai license plate abandoned at the river bank. The vehicle, securely locked, was ready to be transported to one of the the neighboring countries.

The police towed the truck back to the police station in Bansaew Sub-district in Chiang San District and contacted the registered owner, Miss Supranee Butrchan, 27, a local of Ubonratchathani Province, for further inquiry.

Tornado hits Pang-Nga Province

PANG-NGA, 23 June 2014, (NNT) - A twister has hit Pang-Nga Province in the southern region of Thailand, damaging a local governmental building.

The twister, formed after series of extreme changes of weather patterns, has touched down in the area of Takua Pa District Municipality, leaving trails of destruction along its path.

Shortly after the storm hit, local administration and disaster prevention and mitigation officials were deployed to provide assistance to the affected residents. They immediately removed trees blocking the road, while assessing damage on the buildings in the area.

The office of the local prosecutor has been severely damaged by the tornado, which blew off the office rooftop, leaving its interior exposed to the rain.

The damaged rooftop allowed rainwater to collect in the inner structure, causing parts of the ceilings to collapse. Authorities have to proceed with extreme caution, as the entire top portion of the building could collapse.

Poll shows Thai public satisfied with Peace and Order Council performance
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, June 23 -- One month after the military coup staged by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), a substantial majority of the respondents surveyed in a nationwide survey conducted by Suan Dusit Poll said they were satisfied with its performance.

Suan Dusit Poll on Sunday released the results of its survey conducted on 1,614 people nationwide between June 1-21, showing that the NCPO scored 8.82 out of 10 points on administering Thailand in the past month after staging the May 22 bloodless coup.

Four out of five respondents--72.79 per cent-- said the general atmosphere in the country had improved while 69.6 per cent said the military junta was able to resolve several significant problems such as settling the debt to farmers who joined the rice-pledging programme of the previous government, and just over half--50.48 per cent--said they were most satisfied with the Peace and Order Council's performance in being able to resolve urgent problems quickly.

Slightly less than half--49.02 per cent of respondents--said the NCPO exercised its power appropriately and quickly, while 37.98 per cent said it was recognised that some groups of people still opposed the junta as they believed their rights had been limited, according to the poll.

While many oppose the NCPO, 34.02 per cent of all respondents nevertheless want the military to urgently resolve economic problems, corruption and the social divisiveness prevailing in the country, and 21.9 per cent want it to more quickly reform Thailand in order to create confidence among foreign visitors and investors.
