webfact Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Public Hearing on new Pattaya Expressway extension turns violent in SrirachaPATTAYA: -- On Tuesday morning a Public Hearing was held at The City Sriracha Hotel, just outside of Pattaya, which was supposed to present the results of a feasibility study on a proposed extension to the Burapavithi Expressway. The meeting turned violent with many angry residents voicing their disapproval at the plans which will cut through residential areas.Initially the extension was due to run through the Sriracha City Center but the route was amended and now runs through a residential area and may lead to some residents losing their homes. The meeting was initially chaired by Khun Lerdsak, the Deputy Governor of the Expressway Authority of Thailand, but he was soon forced to leave the meeting room after he was allegedly pushed by angry residents. Eventually he returned and attempted to present the report to delegates who were represented by former Member of Parliament Khun Pansak.Full story: http://www.pattayaone.net/pattaya-news/134383/public-hearing-on-new-pattaya-expressway-extension-turns-violent-in-sriracha/-- Pattaya One 2014-07-09
Suriya4 Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 These protesters should be arrested for preventing the happiness of most Thai people who will benefit from having the express way. The majority wanted the express way. The minority should just shut up and bend over. 1

The majority wanted the express way. The minority should just shut up and bend over. Would you take the same stance if your house was likely to be taken over by compulsory purchase for an expressway? The monies received from the state are also unlikely to reflect the true value of the land and house. Not condoning violence but feelings do run high and the current route was not the originally proposed one so people on the latter route wonder who had the clout to get it changed. 2

This is what you call progress, progress for all, those protesters wouldn't bat an eye if the expressway would be on some one else land would they now? if they will be adequately compensated that they should accept it...
Tatsujin Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Ah, a true reflection on Thai society currently, where the few believe they have more rights than the many and try to dictate to them on some imaginary moral high ground.
Sigurris Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Tatsujin. Don't know where you are from but open your eyes man. This happens all over the world exactly the same. I rarely stick up for Thai's but on this subject they are acting in an entirely normal way. They are protecting their nests. At the same time they would not give a damn if it happened to someone else. In the UK we call them NIMBY'S. Not in my back yard. 2

Any property has at least three valuations, in increasing order I would suggest they are 1,the mean price for land in that area as deemed by the land registry, 2 the actual 'recently sold' price of similar property in that area 3,then, as you suggest the fantasy price the owner thinks it is worth. I was only suggesting that the first, and lowest price, would be offered. Edit ..to try to clarify point 2 as actually sold price. Edited July 9, 2014 by ThaidDown
joepattaya1961 Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Wait, wait........the Burapha Viti Expressway is the (elevated) Express way from Bang Na to the beginning of the Chonburi By-Pass. Does that mean that this Expressway will be continued in an elevated way through Chonburi, Bang Saen, Sri Racha into Pattaya? Would be something, although some fly overs in Sri Racha would be good, especially if the #7 will be transferred into a toll-way.

rickirs Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 The Junta should condemn the Deputy Governor of the Expressway Authority of Thailand for even holding a public hearing knowing there is public contention. In the new society of Thai Happiness, public hearings will only invite conflict and expressions of unhappiness. If all the public wants is information, that's within the Junta's allowance for freedom of speech. But when people get too comfortable about challenging decisions on public projects, their protests may extend to other issues in society that may build into more significant opposition. I don't know how the Junta can afford such liberty.
Mobi Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 If you ever needed one, this is a very good reason why you should never buy a house in Thailand. Doesn't matter where it is, you never know when they might decide to construct an express-way through it or near to it, to say nothing of one of your neighbours opening a karaoke or a police protected gambling den etc and so forth....that's always assuming the ex doesn't take it from you.... The annals of Thai Visa are chock a block with farang property owners who have had reason to bitterly regret such investments.....me included 1
Benmart Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 While I can see the pros and cons of this issue, it is for Thais to decide. My comments are best kept to myself.
Zeegator Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 These protesters should be arrested for preventing the happiness of most Thai people who will benefit from having the express way. The majority wanted the express way. The minority should just shut up and bend over. Is "preventing the happiness of most Thai people" an offence? Which majority are you referring to, the one that was counted as a result of a referendum? Would you have the same opinion if your home was being threatened?

Ulic Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Power plant, drug rehab, expressway, all necessary but not in my back yard. (NIMBY) Personally I think the people who have there home expropriated to build an expressway should get a 50% bump in the homes valuation. It would make the project more expensive but smooth the approval process. If the project is really necessary than a slight cost increase should not hold the project back.

Which, of course, is the same fictitious price that they will be forced to pay for a replacement having been compensated at the 'true value of the land and house'. Not surprised they are upset.
