Truck or Car Covers - Do you use one?

Featured Replies

Any feedback from the esteemed motoring clan on these or recommendations?

Seen many different types from those that look like no more than clear plastic bags to ones like the attached that do everything but prevent nuclear fall out.

Is there much difference between the 999 baht jobbies from Big C or Tesco and others from autoshops that can be 2500 or more?

Are they a fire hazard vis a vi hot engine bay?

I have used them and they all seem about the same, except have to warn you about one thing. Bird/gecko poop & dust accumulate on the exterior of course, and you have to then hose down the cover before storing it, then let it dry, so sometimes they are more trouble than they're worth.

Thanks for the feedback. Think it would be easier to clean the crap off a cover than my truck - murphy's law I guess, wash, polish, wake up in the morning to rain, bird shit , sap, mystery white scratches ..... is not a way to start your day.

Then of course is the parking lot door scratch brigades...

Don't get me started on parking lot door dings. I'll park at the end of the lot to avoid those. But, I'll tell you a strange story that happened recently and why I started using a car cover again on one of mine. I park them in a large well lit car port/garage, but some of the lights are directly above the cars. Those lights attract insects. Those insects attract geckos. Those geckos attract cats.

Long story short, woke up one morning and found long scratches on the hood of the car, and my wife told me she heard some shrieking cat in the night. Turns out the cat jumped on the car hood to try to jump up to the light to get the geckos....only in Thailand....

I have a white SUV. When I go work, it is parked outside with a cover. Not a cheap one, the one the manufacturer supplies. Usually about 30 days at a time. I took the car to get washed and was astonished to see dark blotches all over the white paintwork, except on the side which was protected from the sun. The car wash lady showed me that it didn't matter how hard she tried, these marks stayed put.

She then asked me if I used a car cover and encouraged me to refrain from using it. Apparently, when raining, moisture forms (condensation/little bit of rain, I suppose) and leaves little pools of water. Sun comes out and bakes it hard on to the pain, inside the cover.

She reckoned my only solution was to take it to one of these super cleaning type places, which is what I did. Cost me 3000 baht, but was 3 hours and all sorts of electric buffers and polishers were used. The manager of the shop told me this kind of remedial work is quite common

The cheaper covers are usually harder/stiffer, which could scratch your paintwork.

Had several covers, the thicker plastic one that is falling to bits and a thinner one that tears at the slightist tug the wrong way.

I only use a cover under the cover of my car port so I got bro in law a tailor to make a white cotton one from bed sheets works a treat so far.

Depends on how long you are leaving the cover on for.

I put a good quality cover over my Isuzu whilst I was out of country. On my return 3 mts later, I found that there had been plenty of windy days which blows the dust around, over and under the cover. When I removed the cover, it was as if someone had given it a light sand over with sand paper. crying.gif Not all bad as I had it buffed and all came out, Bt2000 later.smile.png I then left it without a cover and went overseas for 4 mts and on my return, had it washed all good. thumbsup.gif

Stuff the covers, never again.crazy.gif

Kwaks is right. Use any cover but first put a cotton sheet over the ride, cover on top......thumbsup.gif

Was thinking more for daily use - putting it on when I get to the office and again when I get home in the evening.

There are a few type of car covers. Some protect your car from all the elements like rain & sun and some only protect against dust and are not waterproof. If you keep your car outside you will need a waterproof type cover and if you keep your car in a covered carport a dust cover will do. I have cats so I keep a dust cover on my car so the cats wont scratch it.

Waterproof cover, away for months, rainy season comes, humidity high, condensation under the cover with nowhere to go, mold and mildew in the interior ... and how do I know this ?

I met a company at the Motor Expo spcarcover.com ... their I bought a full cover and a sun cover. Later talking to them they agreed to make me two half covers as the rears of two of our cars catch a lot of stuff off the roof when it rains.Pictures enclosed ... I didn't want full covers as there is far more chance of scratching paintwork when putting on or removing, especially as the Civic has been de-orangepeeled.

I actually use ONR which is a dry wash before attaching any covers ... bit of a pain but reduces the chance of scratching surface. Actually a good idea to put a cloth cover on first ... the covers actually have 'some sort' of lining.

I use the sun cover when I think where I park that the cover will still be there when I get back .. eg golf course ...the car is lovely and cool when we return ... even on the hottest day.

Just look at their website for details... covers are high quality in my opinion ...

And here is a pic of the cover to keep the heat out when parked ... you can trap the retainers in the boot and bonnet to slightly deter the light fingered brigade. It works really well ...

Thank you, how much did you pay ? For sun cover you just needed a cheap tarpaulin, why paying anything custom made ?!

I have found this, best quality and most famous in Thailand it seems, do you know them ?

Bear in mind that I bought at Motor Expo and they were supposedly on offer.

I’m pretty sure that full cover was 1600thb and the sun cover was either 700 or 800thb. The two half covers' they made me later as a 'special' and delivered to our house,  she charged me a total of 1600thb.

A cheap tarpaulin … no tarpaulin for me thanks

1 … the guy who polished up the car for me would have a ‘dicky fit’

2 … ‘see Falang with  !!! over his car’ … think I want to avoid that thank you

3 … tarpaulin is heavy and not easy to fold or light in weight

Don’t know the company BUT the material choices offered look remarkably similar to the below. I had the 3rd one down on the attached photo…translated as foil. Looking back maybe I should have gone for the top quality.

Used the sun cover again today …car really cooled after four hours. So cost is now down  less than 100thb/use ... we play golf twice a week so in a year the cost/use will be next to nothing and we will have had a cool car to get into and little or no UV or heat damage to the leather seats etc ... just get one

As I said earlier whenever possible I do a dry car wash with ONR (wash and shine) before putting any cover on ... reduces chances of swirls etc.

Thanks again. Can you tell me what to buy to make a dry car wash ?

☺ ONR on it's own or ONR Wash and Shine ...you should be able to buy it from someone at www.thaiwashercar club ... How to use just google ONR.

You have to be a touch careful when using though ... watch the videos and learn!☺

Cats also seem to like sleeping on cars with covers, and happily leave a stream of p*ss behind. I solved this by sprinkling ground black pepper on the cover where they slept. Never saw them again !

I think it's the sun he's protecting the cars  from.

'kin roof sticks out more than the carport  14 years ago builder attached electric supply to facia ...

Every time it rains I have to wash black streaks off the back of the cars ... carport extension is the answer ...

Anyway wasn't this topic about using a car coverNew_Roof.jpg.2c0168cfd01958272369c146cdbea722.jpg

See his answer.

I had the same issue with rain from the roof leaking onto my car, the gutters did wonders.

My mistake. I had a problem with the sun hitting the back of the car in the afternoon, but I had the  carport extended by 3 metres, which kept the rain and the sun off.

Stored a mates car for months a long time ago with a quality cover on in, expensive anyway

When he took the cover of the car it was covered in dust and crap and the paint was scratched, there was a lot of wind where i lived

I would not store a car under a cover ever again, just give it a wash when necessary

Wow

... the first one ... great idea BUT if your car isn't spotlessly clean chances are you may get some beautiful swirls ...

... the second one ... another great idea ... wonder what happens when the wind blows ...
