Huge amount of rice missing in Phichit

BANGKOK: -- The Army's inspection of rice warehouses has found that almost 47,000 tonnes of rice is missing from a company's facility in Phichit's Bang Mun Nak district.

The information was presented at a recent meeting presided over by Phetchabun Army commander Maj-General Sawai Palakan that was convened to follow up the progress of seven teams checking 83 rice warehouses and 16 silos in Phichit's 12 districts.

The meeting heard that the inspection was 70 per cent complete and so far 46,961 tonnes of rice was missing while some broken rice grain was mixed in two silos.

As a result, the Army told the Commerce Ministry's Public Warehouse Organisation to file a police complaint while rice samples were submitted for quality checking.

The Phichit inspection is scheduled to finish next month.

Its much easier to transport that way, not needing 47,000 pick-up trucks.

Very well possible that a big part of the missing rice never even existed. There were more ways to make money from the rice scheme. Bring in one sack more times f.i.

As the boys have said on this site, there are ways to manipulate the tonnes, what the investigators need to find out, which way , either way, corruption is indicated, so find out from whom.

Having both Thaksin and Yingluck in exile would not automatically be problematic. However, having them in exile together with all their stolen monies in offshore accounts is hugely problematic as he has been using this money to buy expensive propaganda and funding terror cells aimed at splitting the Thai nation. Seeing as Prayuth has no jurisdiction over the Caymans,BVI, UAE, Montenegro and Nicaragua amongs other countries banking systems(unfortunately!), he can't confiscate this stolen money so better not let Yingluck do a runner.

I dispute the need for 47,000 one ton pick-up trucks. The way most farmers overload them I reckon you could probably get away with using a couple of dozen.

I moved here two years ago and the main (only) crop here is rice. The farmers knew all about this state of affairs but just shrugged their shoulders, 'as long as we get our money....' Prayuth smelt which way the wind was blowing when farmers' representatives threatened to blockade Bangkok if they didn't get their <deleted> money and do the <deleted> audits themselves, which would inevitably involved violence. We were told that the audits couldn't be done until the scheme came to an end. Well it has come to an end, but if it had come to an end the way the government wanted, you can be sure that none of this would have come to light.

I totally agree, and I issued those exact comments a few days ago when her permission to flee vacation was announced.

As I said then, obviously a deal has been struck with Thaksin. Let little sis go, I (Thaksin) will bow out and the PTP are yours to do with as you please.

I agree that the warehouse-boss, or whoever he pays to take the blame, should be prosecuted.

There should also be strenuous efforts to recover the money defrauded.

But to try to claim, that the person who originated the idea, then continued to insist that it must continue for several more years despite growing claims/potential for corruption, should somehow be absolved of any blame whatsoever, that's asking too much IMO.

He took all the credit, now it's time to shoulder some of the blame, but S-Clan members don't like to admit mistakes, very often (if ever).

Depends on how you look at it. If she does not come back it pretty much seals the deal for PTP corruption. Any case brought up against them will have a tainted view because of her running from the law and her brother who every one knows was calling the shots both living in a self imposed exile rather than defend charges against them

Nobody is claiming that Thaksin made money from this particular case. However he very cynically, even by Thai standards, fostered and augmented the atmosphere of corruption for his own ends. The results are still visible everywhere. I could go on but I would be banned from TV.

Add... more and more discrepancies / serious discrepancies are being found. There is a strong chance that red / easily corruptible warehouse owners had, some time back, already taken an attitude of 'don't worry, nobody will be allowed to touch us'.

Now an obvious question ' where would the protection have generated from'?

Off topic a little, but necessary - can we please stop using "self-imposed exile" for Thaksin? He's a fugitive from the law, nothing more, nothing less. He is not a political martyr in exile. YL of course is nothing atm.

If privately owned then surely any responsibility for discrepancies must lay with the warehouse owner?

If "government" owned the responsibility would surely lay with the warehouse managers and their superiors in the govt department responsible for warehousing rice?
