two things :o

first i would like to thank everyone for the help getting an internet connect in my condo from my lap top it took some doing, nearly 2 weeks mr ken (my husband) was pulling his hair out he is now bald (only joking he was bald to start with). ended up my vodafone mobile connect 3 g card would not work. so used a sim card connected to ais and hi presto 24 hrs for 100 baht not bad. easy when you have people like thai visa helping strangers out. thank you

secondly baht bus (no i am not going off on one) i have read you can hire a baht bus for the day roughly what is the going rate for the day. no i haven't gone mad its for a colleague who is going to pattaya for the first time in september and will be doing a lot of sight seeing ie the gardens temples etc. probably not the most comfortable route to take, but he likes to take local transport where ever he goes in the world.

I will probably get flamed here but I paid 1000 baht for a bus for the day and we went everywhere.

(Apologies to all those who believe people like me ruin it for everyone else....etc etc)

The going rate to hire a baht bus use to be 1000 baht per day, but since the fuel went up I don't know if you can still get one for that price.

Why not renting a car? I would deem that much safer than sitting in the back of a Baht Bus...

Further, I would negotiate the price WITHOUT the fuel and make sure that the bus is fuelled up when you start hiring. That way, they cannot play the fuel price card.

Not sure if you want to go the baht bus route at this time of year, with the rain and wind and all. I'll ask the folks downstairs (1 man and 1 woman) that use their cars for private taxis what they would charge for a days excursion. I use them when I want to take a trip somewhere (like Nong Nooch, or on my visa runs).

I'll try and get some quotes on chartering a baht bus as well.

You hop on a baht bus. How do you know where you are going? Where will they take me?

:o:D

Most baht buses run a circuit around a specific route. Not really sure how the routes are layed out though. If you get on one bus, it may take you down #2 road passed Big C, around the Dolphin round-about, down Beach Road and back up to #2 road.

Others go to/from Jomtien, or along #3 road, ect.

Be careful when asking a driver where he is going. He will assume you are "chartering" him (at up to 10 times the normal fare) to go there, even if it is on the route he was going on any ways !

Why not hire a comfortable taxi?

They will take you to the airport for less than 1,000 baht. To drive around the local countryside would probably cost much the same.

I would not recommend renting a car unless you are familiar with the area or else the only site seeing you will be doing is of motorcylces trying to get around you all day long. Not to mention actually finding the sites you want to see.

Car hire sounds great...but the thought of someone driving round the Pattaya area AND looking at the sites at the same time sounds like a recipe for disaster....I would get a driver and car for the day.

OR -

If there are a few of you get a minibus, lots of room air etc, and I think they're about 2000 baht a day.

much appreciated nong nooch and the like is what he would be interested in, i agree with you a private taxis would be the way to go. my colleague will be arriving mid to late september (i am not so sure about the weather then). i would be grateful for some details of the private hire or baht bus rates.

thanks chez

Some info for the second question you had.

Many places you can reach around town with a couple 10 baht "baht bus" rides. For other sight seeing destinations check out what is offered at some of the travel agencies selling tours.

The tour company picks you up at your hotel and brings you back, sometimes meals are included. No messing around with bargaining out the cost of rides. The visitor doesn't have to see everything in one day. And don't forget Thailand's 2 tier pricing. When you stop at some of these attractions and you are not on an "organized professional tour" you may end up paying a higher price to enter the exhibit.

Just a thought.
