The Duang Tawan closed maybe four years ago or more, when the intrepid "owners" purchased to forecourt area (which they didn't own) for a reputed king's ransom. Work progressed on a 24/7 basis and then one day, in true Thai style. STOPPED! Sat like that for a long time, untill recently, when work has resumed at a pace resembling a retarded snail. I hope it comes back to it's former glory, as the rooms were great along with the staff (they will never be replaced)

The "Al Farhook" certainly does serve goat curry, I had it on the last visit as it was the lesser of ten thousand evils

"I have just been advised that Rydges is offering Forum Members a rate of 1,350 baht nett, including American Breakfast, from the day after Songkran. April 16 I believe."

Stayed there last week. You can walk directly across the road from Rydges and about 200 metres up towards the pavement markets and walk through the walkway in the wall turn left and book at agent next to the 711 for 1200 baht - ask for May(ladies name) (or walk in price 1680 at hotel). Not a bad saving for a 3 minute walk. (same deal with breakfast)

Still a little high for what I usually like to spend but I found the hotel worth staying at - no complaints.

as for good budget places I cannot see a lot of people sharing them as it takes a long time sometimes to find the perfect one that suits and people like to know it will stay that way.

As most of the posters are expats and consequently rent (or own) a house, I don't understand the purpose of this poll/thread.

I did not know that this site was for people living in Thailand only. Sorry about that old mate maybee you should state that somewhere so all the visitors to the site do not bother to register unless they live in LOS. Or is it just a few of your members ( Adjan jb ) that thinks the Thaivisa site belongs only to them for the use only of them, if so then that is cool also !!!!!. In my opion you should welcome all posts. Please can someone advise me Cheers. :o If this is just your old time members being ignorant I belive they should be put right on the purpose of the site.

Sorry about that. I didn't mean to offend you.

This is a subject close to my heart (the site being "for the old hands" or people living in Thailand)

Too much is said by too few (and yes I have had a few posts the past couple of months and I do live in Thailand)

On the subject of the best hotel that cannot be determined as some people just want a "doss house" with cold water, insect ridden rooms etc., and have an accommodation budget of a Baht 100.00/day or those who want want some comfort.

The best hotel in Chiangmai at the present time is without question the Sheraton Chiangmai (and the Regent albeit in Chiangmai province it is not in Nakhon Chiangmai)

The new Consulate Park when it is in operation might perhaps give the Sheraton a run for it's money (if the hoo haa is anything to go on)

Bottom line it's horses for courses

:D

Yes the Duang Tawan might have ranked but from my recollection it has been closed for closer to ten years.

Duang Tawan.. is that that huge building that's perpetually under construction?? Was open like a couple of months YEARS ago, then back to their usual mode of operation: being under construction. ;-)
Didn't know it actually opened.

Heard that it and the land that is now fenced off opposite that many moons ago used to be the main Night Bazaar was lost as part of a gambling debt?

The new Consulate Park when it is in operation might perhaps give the Sheraton a run for it's money

Along with the other ....was it 5 or 12 (according to the press) 5* Hotels that are due to be constructed.

Looking forward to thousands of affluent visitors. Should help increase the price of most things. Will any tuk tuks be available other than outside these places :o

Yes, check out this booking site, which was recently recommended to me as well. I know some of the hotels and checked some of the prices they list and they're really pretty good.

Suriwongse is also in there, and again not a bad price. (Never seen the rooms though).

Cheers,

Chanchao

Re: Suriwongse There is currently an enormous building being built next door to it, and the racket starts about 07:30 and continues all day. And I mean REALLY loud. Even in the restaurant, you have to yell to be heard.

The building you are referring to next to the Suriwongse is the Duagn Tawan.

The ants (workers) have not long returned to take up from wherever / whoever left off.

Whether it ever opens would be something I would not place a wager on.

"It's probably drug money being laundered"

On a brighter note tenants have begun to take up occupation in the new "Panthip Plaza building on the corner of Changklan and Sridonchai. That building stood uncompleted and empty for upwards of 10 years.

I am fairly sure it will eventually open. It has been bought by a Singaporean businessman, and the staffing interviews are all but finished. All managerial positions are already occupied.

Stayed in the Rydges last week (1100bt-double room) but moved on to the Porn Ping since it is nearer to the market (wife) and handy for O Mallys/Red Lion/Loy K gin joints.(me) :D

Im sure Rydges charged us for the toilet paper which of course I never use, much prefering the nice little high pressure hose pipe jobby.TICM :D

Both hotels however were Ok.

Had a quick looksee in the new Duang Tawan (opening night)and must say it looks quite impressive but had to meet up with someone in the nearby butterfly bar so didnt hang around.

Read in the B.P./Nation the next day that there will/expecting be a majour building programme over the next few years in "Chiangers"with lots of new **** and ***** stars hotels including I believe an Oriental,Hilton and Conrad as well as lots and lots of wee golf clubs for the rich, foreign too-rists to play with,(one being built by Mr T.) and a brand new Zoo :D

Gonna be just like Lost Vegas :o
