aluminum or metal roof extension and price

My wife and I want to get an extension for the roof at the back of the house to shade the wall from the sun the size is approx 12 m x 1 m . Thai builder has told us metal is the best it will last longer but as we live on the coast I think Aluminum so can anyone give me a answer. The Man also gave us a quote of approx 24 k for metal so what would be the cost of aluminum ?

I suggest you visit the manufacturer and order direct from them. I've never seen aluminium ones in Thailand. If the extension you are looking into has a rounded folded over end to allow the rain runoff then I'm pretty certain these are prefabricated and made to measure. Installation can be done by any handyman.

Check with the manufacturer direct to verify your builder is not overcharging.

A clever handyman can also build one using either asbestos tiles or the pre-painted congregated steel sheets "sang ka see". 12 X 1 meter would cost substantially less than 24k with this method. This method wouldn't have a rounded edge but rather right angles. They can still look nice.

The corrugated colored cement sheets that I used on my house are 1.2m x 1 m. They effectively will cover 0.6 square meters. You would need 20 tiles/sheets to span 12m side by side. The last time that I bought them they cost 55baht each so that equates to 1100 baht for the tiles. I don't think that the supporting structure will cost you 22.9k baht so I think that you should get another quote.

I live in the sticks but there's a place near me that manufactures prefab aluminum patio covers. The next time that I go by I'll pop in and ask him how much a 12 x 1 cover would cost installed.

Thank you for your reply's the aluminum sheets are manufactured with a curled edge and they come in many colors and the steel work to support it and it looks very nice. There is a few houses in our village that have small ones for the carport and we were told it cost them 10 k. We will go to a roof shop and get another quote for this but 12 m x 1 m with steel support and labor at 24 k from one place we shall see what they quote us in another.

I had one of those years ago, and it made a hell of a lot of noise in the rain, I remember water dripping on it after the rain and annoying the heck out of me to the point where I put a piece of carped on itlaugh.png

If I build one of them , I would take the previous advice from an other poster and use composite tiles.

a frame can be easily constructed by anyone with a welding machine and bolted to the house, and it might even be cheaper.

PS: aluminum oxidizes just as fast as steel, especially in a salty environment,

Thank you sirineou for the info I did see on this web site in INDIA that was selling aluminium roofing and they said it would last 40 years as they don't rust. I do know that metal will rust over time. My wife went to a roofing shop in our street and asked them for a quote for 13 m x 1 m just to find out and they told her its 1000 baht a M for aluminium but they would have to come and measure it first. So its about 13 k to 15 k to do it from this shop now that's a lot cheaper than 24 k for metal from the first guy. So we shall see later.

I went to the fabrication facility about 15 kilometers from my home this morning and got a quote on the cover, 12meters long by 1 meter wide. He fabricates his own panels from rolls of material. The roofing would cost 130 baht/meter or 1560 baht. The expense lies in the steel and fabrication of the supporting structure. His quote was 18.500 baht installed on my house about 15 meters from his shop.. I could get the structure fabricated cheaper if I shopped around or bought the steel and made it myself but the quote is "hands off". I don't know where you live but I think that 24 k is still too high. Good luck!

Thanks I live in nongpru banglamug the quote we got yesterday was aprox 13 k fitted may be 15 k so we will go with that, I am not fit enough to do it myself and it would be far too hot for me so thanks everyone for your help.

Anybody know the price of insulated zinc roof sheets and the sizes they come in - Kumuang area.

Any other 'tips' would be welcomed as I am about to re- roof our house.......

Just had quote of 1,800 baht per square meter here in Bangkok for insulated zinc type covering - do not know the exact size but appears to be the same as cement/synthetic type that are normally used. The colored cement type would have been 1,500 baht per square meter for same 36 SM peak roof carport cover. Price is all inclusive and includes removal of old PVC and most support and new steel framework.

Would like to add - had driveway area done with above insulated panels and sound level is low for even heavy rain and no leakage at all.

But do caution that if you require cell phone signals they may not get through it - Tesco delivery has had to walk outside the covered area on there visits since polycarbonate was replaced to get enough signal for card transaction machine (and I am in well covered area of Bangkok). You might require a repeater if used for a home to maintain good cell phone coverage. I note a change from five bar to two/one bar on my DTAC phone and cell tower is only about 100 meters away.

But that can be an advantage - no more head covering required.biggrin.png
