Drivers license renewal from 1 yr to 5 yr

Featured Replies

I am due to renew my license from a 1 yr to a 5 yr next month here in Chiang Mai. It seems like I remember reading somewhere recently, that there has been a change in the testing/procedure to get a 5 yr license. Has anyone in the last month or so done this? Thanks

The change from one year to five is not a renewal. There are different requirements to a five year renewal.

- your passport and copy of the fist page, visa page and TM6

- our previous driving license

- residence certificate from immigration OR your work permit

- certificate from a Doctor that you're fit to drive

- fee for your new driving license

- pictures are not required any more

- you can make copies also in the traffic department building in case you forget something

Residence Certificate, Work Permit or Yellow Book....latter the best for everything.

Does Chiang Mai immigration currently issue housing reports/residence certificates?

According to the paper they gave me yesterday at the Motor Vehicle office, you can apply for this 60 days before expiry.

Also found on the paper they gave me yesterday:

Residence Certificate from Embassy or Consulate (valid for 1yr under Thai law from issue date)

or from Thai Immigration office (valid for 30 days from issue date((original and copy)

or Work Permit or Residence Book (Yellow book)(Original and copy)

I got my one-year yesterday and saw on a sign that stated there is one hour of training for the renewal. I assume that involves sitting in a room and watching a movie in Thai or listening to a Thai speaker; no test so no big deal, but you will need to allow time for it. You could also easily wait more than an hour to have the license made.
